SC61 vs T3/60-1 on Revhard mani which one for 400-500 WHP without too much lag?
Hey guys,
I wanted to know how the two turbos compared to one another. I wasn't able to search for 60-1 because the search function wont take it.
I'm looking for a turbo capable of 400-500 WHP on a 9:4:1 cr, 83mm, LS cranked B18C on pump gas (hah!). The head has some light Portflow work done to it, and Supertech valvetrain but I would like to keep it at stock redline. I dont want a lot of lag, and I haven't done any research on the T3/60-1 so I dont know how the lag is on it.
Right now I am using my Revhard mani which put the compressor towards the driver side of my CRX. I want to be able to keep my oil drain setup close to the way it is now. So the new turbo would also have to have the compressor towards the driver side. It would also be nice to use the same 3" 5 bolt flange that I have for my current T3/T04E turbo, but if I have to I can fab up a new DP (dont really want to though.
So what do you guys think about the 60-1? is it worth it upgrading from a T3/T04E 0.63 ar/60 trim to the 60-1? Also if anyone has any 60-1 threads bookmarked post up the link so I can read up on it.

I have a sc61 on a rev-hard manifold. Spool up isn't bad at all on my 81mm 9:1 cr gsr. I dont feel any "sluggish/turbo lag" on it. I made 446whp on 21 lbs.

i'm using the t3/60-1 with the t04s cover and plan to put down about around 500ish, hits full boost at 4500 but this is on an h22

Here is the T3/60-1 that I was looking at. The thing I like about hte 60-1 is it is about $100-$200 less then the SC61. But I'm stil not sure why I would want to pick one over the other. Can the SC61 support more power then the 60-1? also can the SC61 be bought with a 4" inlet and 2.5" outlet as well? I guess this would be the T04S compressor housing?
it says it's a Garrett T3/60-1:

i have the full-race t3 60-1 and get full spool (11psi) by like 4300 rpm in my 81.5 b18b motor.... from what i hear the sc61 can put down more power and has just about the same spool.... i mean look at all the R&D Full-Race put into their kits and the 60-1 comes with their kits , why not go ball bearing though? is money an issue or no?

Before I was gonna get a GT30R or GT35R, but now I'm looking at low cost alternatives. I want to try upgrading to a larger IC with 2.5 in/out and also 2.5" IC piping. So the costs start to add up.

Just remember that we have 3 different versions of the SC61. You didn't mention what displacement engine you had, but the SC6152 will spool the quickest and still give to 500 at the wheel.

That's right . . . have't had a lot of time to update the site as we're jammin' to get the new catalog done for SEMA.

Just FYI the 60-1 compressor wheel is OLD OLD OLD Technology, the SC61 true 61mm compressor wheel is a new Technology Garret compressor wheel with GT technology. Spool will be better with the SC61 and also be more efficient. You will have much greater power potential with the SC61 61mm compressor wheel compared to the 60-1 58mm wheel sir. Good luck.

Do you know where I can get a new SC61 for the same price as a new 60-1 though? hehehe
So even the Garrett 60-1 turbos have the older wheels? I thought that since it was a Garrett 60-1 that it would have the newer wheel. I remember reading somebody saying that Garrett turbos use parts that are more up to date or that they used newer technology. So I guess this isn't true of all turbos with the Garrett badge? just the GT series turbos?

SC61 is a Garrett GT40 compressor wheel sir. Yeah Garrett still sells the 60-1 turbos but it is not a new GT wheel sir. I sell both Garrett and Precision , you can contact me if you'd like or any of these Honda Tech vendors who sell these and any of us should be able to help you out.
EDIT:Also not just the SC61 uses the GT40 compressor wheel but also any company who sells a Garrett turbo with a 61mm inducer wheel aka Full Race T3/T61 or Phoenix Turbo Blowzilla T3/GT40 , I am a dealer for all of these companies FYI

SC61 is a Garrett GT40 compressor wheel sir. Yeah Garrett still sells the 60-1 turbos but it is not a new GT wheel sir. I sell both Garrett and Precision , you can contact me if you'd like or any of these Honda Tech vendors who sell these and any of us should be able to help you out.

I have heard on here of many of the PT71's dying. My friend had a SP71(PT71) seize the wheel because the center sections sucked. got a new one it died in 3 days, got another one and on start up the seals were junk now waiting on #4 in 2 months. I watched another precision blow a center section with about 1500miles on it or so and this is all in the last 3 months. Like I said something isn't gettin put together right and I haven't seen anything happening to garret stuff in the same time period.
I am not saying precision is bad just talking about personal experience and opinion.

I have seen 600whp made with an 60-1 (t4)
The 60-1 and "sc61" are both T3/to4s turbos'....both have 61mm inducers....BUT
The 60-1 uses and older garret 7 bladed compressor wheel...as where the "sc61" uses the new garett 6 bladed wheel which spools faster and is all around more "effecient"
That is why the blowzilla/gt35e/sc61 (all the same turbo) run a bit more than there predicesor the older 60-1.
Also the "sc61" is gonna be good for about 20-30 more whp.

Thanks dood...right now it's just a matter of cost. It's only about $200, but when I have to start adding up how much a new IC, IC piping, possibly a new DP and fabrication costs, it adds up.

UM no! The 60-1 does NOT have a 61mm inducer wheel, it is 58mm, I can check some records since I hav measured them before. I will post back . The SC61 or GT40 compressor wheel is more efficient and capable of much more power, people have made 650whp on a 61mm wheel never on a 60-1, I know RLZ made 560whp with a T4/60-1 before but not 600whp

You haven't heard of Garretts going bad before? They do and numerous times as well, also Turbonetics and also Innovative turbos, they all have probs sometimes. No manufacturer is perfect. Garrett and Precision, Turbonetics and ITS are all good turbos. I have had a problem with a few Garrett turbos myself and customers, it happens, a Precision turbo or two also. A few Turbonetics and also know people who have had some recent probs with ITS turbos smoking. Again these are good companies, something apparently slipped, maybe you had a lazy unattentive employee, maybe he got fired BUT not before he built yoru turbo and sent it out.

I think you're going to want a pinch more than a revhard manifold and a T3/60-1 to make 500 on pump.

im making ~440whp on pump with my garrett t3/60-1 .63 a/r @ 21psi. hits full boost around 5500. I paid $450 for the turbo so Im happy with it, has about 6500 miles on it now with no problems at all. If you have the money its always best to buy the better part, but most of the time cheaper stuff will get the job done.

hmm...when i worked over at phoenix turbo....i could have sworn my garett book showed a 60.5 mm inducer but i could be wrong....
and learned about the diff. comp wheel's but i would love some info....i even beleive there was a thread a while back about a honda making 600whp on a 60-1
Either way...the 60-1 is the predisesor to the "sc61"/which shares a the same comp. as the 35r/e

I dont have my "official garrett book" anymore but....i found the inducer size in "
0.03937'=1mm
60-1=2.32=58.92-mm
"sc61"=2.416=61.3-mm
So we'll round up which bring's it to roughly a 59mm inducer..lol
Which is pretty close to what i said....
I'll keep looking for the thread about the 600whp 60-1(p-trim)
