Default sc61 is not for everybody. :)

Well I have a b16a with an sc61 turbo, I didn't pick it, I bought the car with it on.

Well after discovering quite a few shortcuts on the turbo setup after I bought it of course, I need to pull the motor and get the block decked and honed.

I got a labor hookup, to pull the motor for me, but he wants the sc61 as payment, I agreed.

So now I'm new turbo shopping.

I didn't like the lag of the sc61 at all, I'd hit the gas and it was gutless b16, 3000 rpms gutless b16, 4000 rpms gutless b16, 5000 rpms gutless b16, 6000 rpms OHHH **** HOLD ON TO SOMETHING!!!!!

I think it was 10 psi around 5800 rpms, no fun at all, I didn't even get a single pound till I hit 4300-4500 rpms.

I want a more streetable turbo, something that spools around 3000 rpms, something where I can give the car a little throttle the turbo spools and I'm out at a pretty quick pace, not have to downshift two gears to enjoy boost. I want a smooth linear power band.

My boy has an sc44 he is willing to let go, but I think even that is too big.

The motor has 9:7 cp pistons, eagle h beam rods, arp headstuds, golden eagle block guard and an equal length manifold. My goal is 350 whp.

Would the sc34 be the perfect turbo or should I go smaller, I hear the sc50 is good till 450 hp but I don't know if it can hold boost till 8000 rpms.

What do you guys think?

If you want the best turbo for your needs it would be a ball bearing GT28R or GT28RS depending on you whp goals ...

This will spool really fast and get you a good linear torque band.

it might seem expensive, but when you get boost 10 times a day, it only costs 25cents a time

The Sc50 will have no problem holding boost until even 9k rpms on a b16. It's a good turbo for that engine.
However, I think the SC34 is a better choice since it has potential to make more power but will lag a bit more.
GT28rs are in the $1000 range. They won't make as much peak power, but they spool the quickest since they're ballbearing and are relatively small.

I would recommend the same ball bearing turbo(s) if your looking for under 400hp. Now that I have a ball bearing turbo I wouldn't recommend anything else.

is it posisble you had a boost leak and/or an exh leak? If the setup was built wrong these could all contribute to the car feeling like complete crap. also becuase everything needs to be decked, i assume that the motor had a blown head gasket, something was not sealing the combustion chambers, etc...

Wow where you can get an sc34 for 500 bucks??

I would love to get a ball bearing, but it hurts my wallet too much.

I guess I'm kinda leaning toward an sc34 in case I want to go with a little more power, probably get the .48 ar one. Thanks for the replies.

lol you are creeping me out.

Yeah the motor was not decked when the new parts were put in. I had coolant leaking into the cylinder(s) when the car was cold and constant bubbles in my coolant. I'm in the process of removing the motor, taking it to a machine shop and doing everything the right way.

But my hp goal is not that high (350whp) so I don't mind losing the sc61.

That is exactly what I was going to say. I was spooling 8 psi by 4-4.5k on my b16. Full boost was not much beyond that.

i don't think you can even get a garret 57 trim t3/t04e for 500 shipped new.....unless it fell off the truck somewhere....

BTW i have that same turbo and its a great street turbo....starts to spool just under 3000rpm and full boost by 4-4500rpm.......

Like Geoff said you have something wrong ... Period. Is the SC61E overkill for your application? Yes. You need to figure out what's wrong though. On the same displacement motor with some mechanical problems we got 8lbs of boost by 5,800RPM with a much larger T4 turbocharger.

Thanks for the replies,

The motor is bad, it was not decked, when the block guard was installed, it's leaking coolant into the cylinders. The motor is getting pulled and redone at a machine shop.

I understand that if my motor was in good condition the sc61 would spool better, and the sc61 is an awesome turbo, but it's still overkill for my goals, so I was just wondering what would be a good turbo for what I want to do. Thanks again guys, I'm looking at a sc34 or equivalent Garrett hybrid.

thats just a t3.t04e, 50trim it looks like with the .48 turbine. sc61 is very different from that
