Which SC Turbo for built D16?
Well I sold the T3/T04E 46 trim I was going to use on the new motor. I'm thinking bout a PTE turbo to replace it (woo hoo bandwagon). With the new motor I'm aiming for like 300-400whp for now and maybe higher when the head gets done. Anyway I was looking at the SC60 as a replacement. I've seen a few d16's with similar turbos (namely ladysman and turbodcx) and they seem to like it. The head will be done further along the line so I'd rather get a turbo that will support good power now and spool decently and not have to upgrade later on. Just wondering what you all recommend? Art? Rod? MotorMatrix?
The motor setup is:
77mm D16Z6 Golden Eagle Sleeved Block
JE 77mm 9:1 Pistons
Eagle H-Beam Rods
Cometic 77mm Standard Headgasket
Stock Head (For now)
ARP Headstuds
Skunk2 Intake Manifold
H22A Throttlebody
Golden Eagle Fuel Rail
Precision 880cc Injectors
the turbo setup will be:
SFP Tubular Turbo Manifold
2.5" Downpipe to 3" exhaust
Tial 38mm Wastegate
Precision AS 1025 Intercooler (31.5x8x3.5)
Hondata Stage 2B
GM 3Bar Map Sensor

was also looking at the sc34 and sc44. i was wondering how big of difference is there in spoolup time between the mentioned turbos and the sc60.

Re: Which SC Turbo for built D16? (Arturbo)
you think sc50 for 400-500whp on a D16? I thought the SC50 maxed out at like 450hp at the fly?

shat ap dave lol. but serious... just wondering. i don't want to buy a turbo that's gonna run out of breath for the power i want to make. and i don't want to buy one that will be pointless to have because of where it will make power in the powerband

Yah I was considering even the SC61 as well. I don't know of anyone with a D16 running that large of a turbo so I have no idea what the spoolup would be like. What size snail are you guys running on the SOHC car?

SC50. Then once you surpass it's limits, then I would suggest upgrading later. 450whp out of a SOHC is no joke. I have yet to see it happen...so try for 300-350whp first. Then tune for the 400+.

Re: Which SC Turbo for built D16? (VTC_CiViC)
yah he does. i already considered that. but i don't want to have to switch turbos. Brian (Turbodcx) made 343whp/285tq @ 19psi... 8:1 cr on a T3/T04E 60 trim on pump gas. Hate to use other people's setup as a benchmark but those numbers are awesome for a sohc and that cr. Ladysman also runs a 60 trim on his stock d16 @ 13psi and he says it pulls damn good. That's why I was eyin the SC60 or SC34. And the whole point of me selling the 46 trim was to avoid having to upgrade AGAIN.

343whp is NOT 400whp... that's the ultimate difference. The point he made is quite valid, you're gunning for something nobody has gotten yet, so why not shoot for something done... then improve on it. Least that way you won't be out a $700 turbo if you find yourself downgrading later.

Re: Which SC Turbo for built D16? (VTC_CiViC)
yah but i'd rather use a turbo that i know will get to those levels of power... ie 343whp is "something that has been done" and I'm just saying wouldn't using a similar turbo make sense since we know that it will support more and it IS capable of making 300-350whp as CTRCoupe said i should aim for first? remember the turbos are all the same price... if i needed to downgrade for some reason i'm sure it would be easier to find soemone willing to trade a bigger turbo for a smaller one. remember i'm not saying DEFINITELY SC60 either. That's why I said SC34 or 44 were possibilities. I called precision a while back and Rod recommended the 57 trim but when I ran the idea by a few people they said for the $$$... It's would be probably better to get the SC60 since the diff in spoolup time would not be very drastic between a 57trim and a 60 trim.

I would go with the larger SC50. That is what i did. I went with a SC50 .63a/r with a 76 wheel trim. Right now just running off the wastegate i get full boost by 3900 rpms. This turbo is good for 450+ whp.

This is on a d16y8 with pistons, rods and block guard fully ballanced and blueprinted. Also has a built head. Just installed the turbo setup last weekend. I am hoping to get this tuned by Jason(Stoopid) the first part of next month when he comes, so i will have dyno #'s then. Looking for 325+ @15psi. Hopeing for it anyways.
Boost right now is 6.5psi.

Re: Which SC Turbo for built D16? (norcalcrx)
yah i'd much rather the quick spool but i don't wanna have to buy ANOTHER turbo if i do hit the 300-350 like CTRCoupe was sayin. and you said the sc50 will do 450+whp? i thought the #'s on the precision site were flywheel hp... which would limit the hp potential to like 350-370whp

Not yet at least.
I would definitely say since you were wanting some big numbers, you did good by ditching your old turbo.

I think the 50 or 57 trim would work. The 50 trim is more efficient, but will flow about 2 lbs less than the 57 trim. I would like to do what norcalcrx did and go with the big SC-50 with the .63 exhaust.

I think it is fine. It hits real hard and I am only running 13 lbs.

And how much lb/min does a SC61 produce ? I run a 20G (46lb/min) and it's wonderfull for every driving and racing. I suppose a SC61 is bigger than a 20G but if I wanted to go bigger, I would consider this turbo (it's bolt on for me )

yah i would think so too that's why i'm not thinking about that one...
i'm mainly considering the sc50, 34, 44, or 60
