Default Ring gap to big befor filing?

Hey im starting to put my short block together and slide the first compression ring into the cylinder and checked the gap and its like .022 and it should be no more than .019 is this to much gap? Did i get a bad set of rings or what i checked the part number and there je's 81.5 rings and my block is bored to 81.43. Whats wrong here? I had the ring in the cylinder and i used the piston to slide it down to the skirt like shown in evans write up thanks

Possible that the machine shop bored the cylinders too big. Do you know for sure what your piston to wall clearances are?

the bores measure just over 81.4 clearance is .009

if it is .009 in inches that is a little over double what you need. Most forged pistons require .003 to .005 piston to wall clearance for turbo applications.

Yep. That would explain it. You have wayyyy too much piston-to-wall clearance. Time for a new block unless it's sleeved.

do you guys really think he would notice a difference from that.

i've seen worse clearance issues that this & things have worked out fine.

any more insight on this would great...

0.019 for the top ring and 0.022 for the middle ring or something real close to that..

but your piston to wall clearance is a shitty deal...lots of piston slap.
