Replace Cat with drilled Straight Pipe
I don't want to get a new exhaust b/c all my money has been spent for x-mas. I have been thinking about cutting my cat out of the car and replacing it with a straight pipe which i'll drill holes into to help the backpressure. Do you think this will be okay? I have a OBD1 D16Z6

cut holes to reduce back pressure? what are you talking about exactly, a perforated tube like inside a muffler or resonator?

You really think it'll be just as loud? My main goal is just to make it look like it's hooked up since we have **** cops that like to check loud exhausts. Has nobody ever done this before?

Re: Replace Cat with drilled Straight Pipe (shermanyang)
I figured since i have a open downpipe right now and i don't throw any codes then why would it hurt it to free up some exhaust pressure by removing the cat and throwing in a drilled section of pipe. You really think it'll make the car slower? I thought it would actually help the turbo spool up faster but i could be wrong

if you're gonna throw on a full exhaust with a test pipe, a drilled test pipe will interfer with the current of the exhaust flow. now if you're gonna just run a drilled test pipe and no exhaust...i don't think it'll do anything at all.
if you've ever had a hole in any part of your exhaust, you'll know what i'm talking about.

If your running open exahust now you better check and make sure you even have a bulb in your check engine light spot. When you turn the car on does it come on and go back off?

He's OBD1 so why would any kind of exhaust modification after the O2 set a CEL? anwser - it woulden't. You can do anything you want after the o2, ECU won't know the diff. Sounds like a cutout might be a little cleaner setup but 1" holes will act the same way just with a little more turbulance

Ahh, your right. Those E-cutouts are pretty sweet. I like the one mistabone made the best though with just the plate with the wingnuts. Looks like i have some welding to do, thanks for showing me the light

Ya, good call on the old school style cutout. Thats what I'de get if I did one. Nothing to break and you could even make it 100% in your shop either from scratch or using a 2.5 or 3" exhaust flange with studs welded or pressed in. Make it and take pics....
