Recommendation On Cleaning Carbon Out Of Engine
Could someone please recommend to me a product or method of cleaning carbon buildup inside a GSR Engine from running too rich an a/f mixture? Thank you.

Honda Top End Cleaner, available at the dealership. You'll probably need the induction tool too, which is 36 dollars.

pour some water down the intake. Not alot a very small amount. Have you ever seen a piston after a headgasket blows and water seeps in the chamber? Shiny. If this method is to scary do the top engine cleaner.

It's not actually the water that cleans the pistons, its the antifreeze. I've never used the Honda top end cleaner, but the GM top end cleaner works great. Don't worry about using it, it's not made by GM, just repackaged and sold by them. For all I know it may be the same **** that Honda sells.

The induction tool allows you to release the cleaning fluid into the intake manifold at a slow enough rate that you won't hydrolock your engine.
Here's a pic, it's the thing that's screwed onto the bottle of top end cleaner.
Here's a pic of the nozzle, with it's tiny opening.

Yep. All I did was disconnect the brake vacuum line from the intake manifold. Instructions are on the can on what to do. It was a pretty noticble improvement for me after I cleaned it, but I have 100k on my engine. My engine also dynos at exactly what it should be for stock which is great for an old car.

Do you have a Honda part number for the cleaner and induction tool?
Is this going to have any ill effects on a turbo or oxygen sensors (probably not)?

Re: Recommendation On Cleaning Carbon Out Of Engine (slowcivic)
hey slowcivic,
i like to use water injection by ERL, this stuff will cool the charge intake air, resist the presense of detonation, lowers your Nox emission and also steam out the combustion chamber and clean out all the carbon. but if you don't have the royalty of aquiring one, just simply use the HONDA TOP engine clean. ATF and water will do the job just fine. but beware!!! you can hydrolock the motor and bent a rod if the job is not done right......

Get some good ol CARB cleaner from pep boys or something, spray small amounts into your throttle body while pulling the throttle. You'll get lots of smoke out the exhaust and a cleaner engine.

Part number for the Top End Cleaner is 08732-9008. It's about 4 dollars a bottle. The induction tool is 08732-9010. I'm sure it's o2 sensor safe, because why would Honda make something that wasn't? The directions don't mention removing the o2 sensor prior to cleaning either.
Honda also makes a throttle plate cleaner and that does a separate job from what the top end cleaner does.

Hey, thanks everyone for your input and suggestions! I also heard that if you are running too rich for awhile, its best to change your oil more often than you normally do. Thanks again, everyone!!

Just to clear a few things up. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Jared »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">It's not actually the water that cleans the pistons, its the antifreeze.</TD></TR></TABLE>
Yes it is actually the water that cleans out the carbon. Water isn't compressible within the cylinder, that's why you hydrolock, and the carbon clings to it as it leaves, via the exhaust valve. You can get the same effects as the honda top end cleaner w/a little spray bottle and a few mists of water, as long as you're extremely careful. Another cheap alternative is seafoam. You can mix it in w/your oil and let the car run until it dies. Wait a minute start it back up and your car will smoke for another 5-10 minutes, then you're clean.
