Questions on Intercooler Piping Diameters
I was wondering-- for my setup 8-10 psi on a t3/04e, should i go w/ 2.5" piping, or 2.25" piping, i've heard that for my boost setup, that bigger piping won't be very efficient. Let me know what u think.
The larger piping flows more air, similar to the to4e and to4s housings. The 60-1 with the t04s housing flows 60lb/min and the t04e housing flows 52 lb/min. The larger piping would give the ability to flow more air over the smaller piping, and therefore gives an better overall ability for power production.
we ran out of capacity on 2.5 inch piping when we running our water to ari with 62-1 that we sold. We upgraded to 3inch flows heck of alot better actually showed an increase in hp same turbo we used but different piping. the piping smaller will help spool but it hinders performance on the top.
Looks at ecko car with crzy 4inch piping thats some insane **** as well as most of the mustangs they have to run larger pipign for the more air that they push.
2.5inch is adequate as well as 2.25 on most honda street cars your not really gonna see much of a difference between the 2

I agree that the piping shouldnt make much of a difference at all on a street car, but a race car pushing some serious psi their would be a greater amount of air flowed. I went with 2.5" piping on my car just to keep this consistent. The most common is to go with 2.25" from the turbo to the intercooler, then 2.5" from the intercooler to the throttle body.
IMHO for a light turbo setup just go with whatever size inlet/outlet your running on your IC. Either piping size would be perfectly fine in my experience.

guy, what about 3inch for daily driving 7 psi? i mean i need some new piping soon.
so slower spool is the only trade off? what about air velocity? can anyone explain more? tjx

Why not 1.75"?
No not screwed but like art said your not making over 500whp, you don't need that much air flow. My buddy has 2.25 before the ic the 2.5 after. And his car was very quick. He also had the right size ic as well. Sell it someone will by it.
Hey guys, I'm in a similar situation: I've got a 2" OD for both inlet and outlet on a Starion intercooler that I'll try to use for this setup:
stock H22 + T3/T04e (looking to push 7-8psi for now)
It won't be too hard for me to weld off the inlet and outlet and put on a larger diameter opening...is this worth my time?

Before putting my set-up together, I did the calculations and flow is not restricted on my engine (d16z6) until around 300hp with only a 2" pipe. I went with this because there is less volume = faster spool-up. I am, however, changing it to 2.5" for the last section before the throttlebody, because you want it just about as wide as the inlet, for flow. I don't recall the equation, but I know it's in corky bell, for one.
So you guys dont recommend piping this big for you D series? J/K...
2.25 should be adequate...2.5 may not be a bad way to go if you plan on running more boost in the near future, save you the cost of having to upgrade later on...

OT, but I wish I had a camera at the car show here last weekend. There was a Nova with an ATI supercharger. This pertains since the charge piping was 5" (no kidding).

get aload of my intercooler piping set up
14b turbo/starion IC
1.75" from the turbo neck to a 2.25" and then into the IC inlet of 2.0".
Out of the outlet of the IC which is 2.0" back to a 2.25" pipe all the way to the throttle body.
I am stuck with this now regarless, but will it work ok?
