Default questions about sc50??

Before everyone starts saying to SEARCH, trust me I have. I tried searching many different names and came up with nothing.

I have been researching alot, especially on honda-tech. I am piecing together a turbo kit to go on a D16y8 (96 civic ex).

This is what I have so far.

-lovefab SST manifold (d-series)
-3" DP and Exhaust
-255 lb/h Intank fuel pump
-Hondata s200 with 3 bar
-Precision Intercooler (not sure on what dimension im going to get yet, back door design worth it?)

This is just the major items, will get oil feed and return, etc...

If im missing anything suggestions welcome.

BTW, this will be going on a fully built motor. Sleeved, rods, pistons
basically I will have this same setuphttp://www.5thgencivic.com/myride.htm

I am having a hard time deciding witch turbo. I will only be reving up to the stock redline of 7200 rpm. I would like to see full boost (16 psi, BTW, this is all the boost this engine will see, goal is 300-350 hp, unless more boost is required to reach my goal) between 4-5k, preferably when I shift not to drop out of boost. Also would like the turbo to have a beast top end, not worried about lag to keep drivability. This will also be a daily driver.

Im not familiar with reading compressor maps, I have been searching about the sc50 precision. Its rated at 450 hp and I dont plan on going above that. The link below will give you more info.

http://www.precisionte.com/pro...rgers

Okay, now, Will this turbo give me the kind of spooling and horsepower goals I am looking for, please, suggestions are more than welcome.

Thanks

-Jon

Precision SC50 is EXACTLY what you want. Your goals are the same as mine. Full boost between 4000-5000rpm with around 300-350whp is what I am looking for on my D16Y8 with this turbo. I am using the same manifold and everything. Go with the .48 A/R for the quick spool up.

Right on, I nailed it right onw the spot......So glad that all the research paid off. And learning how to read compressor maps on my own

Thanks,

What would be the difference will the bigger A/R on the hot side??? better top end? Slower spool?

You did nail it right on the spot.

The bigger A/R will cause a slower spool up and you won't hit full boost until after 5000rpms, but on the other hand you will be able to make more top end power. With the stock redline the .48 is a better choice for you. It is still capable of around 400whp.

Okay now.....one more question.

In the future....I plan on building the head to rev to about 8500 rpm. In this case, would the .63 suit my need a little better.

Still not sure if im going to do this, slim chance at this point in buying everything. But would like to know

With that redline you will want the .63 A/R. You can buy the .48 A/R and have the housings switched later if you decide to go with a higher redline.

No problem.

I don't like when people start telling everyone to search either, especially on a setup specific question like this, everyone's setup is different, therefore requiring different answers. Good luck with your turbo.

if you plan on revving higher in the future go with a stage 5 exhaust wheel and .63 ar for a BEAST top end. I plan on running the sc50 with a stage5 wheel and .63 ar on my stock d15b. from what ive read of other peoples setups and compared to mine im guess ill have full boost at 5500.

Just wanted to add that if you got a .48 now it would be REALLY easy to change to a .63 later. You wouldn't have to send the turbo off or anything, so just keep that in mind.

And I disagree with the last guy. A stage5 is too big for your goals. But that's my opinion and in my opinion I like responsive turbos. I fired up my freshly rebuilt 84.5mm B18C today and I'm using a stage3/.63 with a .50-trim wheel (basically a SC50).

5500 is too late on a car with a 6800rpm redline, IMO. An SC50 with .48 A/R will make WAY more power than your stock D15 will ever hold on the top end. About 230whp more. In that situation, why would you want to sacrifice having full boost 500-1000rpm earlier for a top end power level you'll never use.

I totally agree. I would shift and immediately drop out of boost. Besides, I can change the A/R to a .63 later. But he is right, I would never see the top end that the turbo is capable of.

Damn does anybody read the whole post anymore??? THE FIRST LINE OF MY POST SAYS "if you plan on revving higher in the future"

I also believe that the .48 ar is going to be too small for your power goals, you can use 5thgencivics set up as a good comparison as he went with a .63 ar on his turbo. You can find his dyno charts in this post. Notice how early he spools..... https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=759078 .

Where are you spewing your WHP number from? The performance of the D15 Devine has, has suprised the hell outta me numerous times and I drive a 400+ whp civic. I'd be willing to bet stock for stock he would eat your Y8 at the track no problem.

Anyway...for Shadow103rd's goals, definitely the .63 A/R. I don't see the .48 A/R satisfying your goals. The difference in the A/R is practically unnoticeable when addressing spool up time; few hundred rpms.

As for the stage 3 and 5 wheel, its really a toss up. The stage 3 wheel will be just fine for your goals. It will have a nicer powerband granted you have the traction to make use of it. The stage 5 wheel would yield a impressive top end pull granted you have a really good flowing motor (good headwork, no bottlenecks in the exhaust, bigger bore, good tune) and a considerably higher redline as Devine pointed out.

The SC50 with .48 A/R is good to around 400whp at 30-32psi. That's about 230whp more than a stock D15 is going to handle.

Yeah definately, I don't see 400whp satisfying his goals. Let's suggest a laggier turbo to him because of this.

Just so you know, there have been guys hitting full boost (16psi) around 4200rpm. Look up boosteded9, he hit full boost with the SC-50 .60/.63 (69 trim) at 4200rpm, afc hack, so I'm not sure where you getting this majic number of 5000rpm full boost from??

On one of our d16y8's with a built head we are using the sc50 with 63 ar and a 76 wheel trim. We see full boost of 10 psi at 4300 rpms.

Thats impressive for a stage 5 wheel, I would have thought for more lag.

There are too many other variables (i.e. exhaust size, manifold design, downpipe, etc.) In most cases I have seen the .63 A/R didn't hit full boost until after 5000rpms in higher boost applications. You're missing the main point, all other variables being equal, the .48 A/R will spool faster and will likely make more power than 90% of the .63 users are making on D Series engines.

You really ought to review his initial post. His goals are approx. 300-350whp at about 16psi. With the .48 A/R, I am certain he will not reach it at a respectable boost pressure. His car is gonna be daily driven; Who runs 30-32psi, much less above 20psi DAILY DRIVEN? And at that boost pressure, I'm sure the turbo will be getting inefficient. Yes, he said the car will be daily driven which means he will probably want these power figures off pump gas.

With this in mind, there are sacrifices to be made and it is dealing with lag. The only time you'll have to deal with lag is from the initial go; Who races someone below 4500 rpm? I would shift up in the next gear and the motor will have all the necessary potential energy to fully spool the turbo to the desired boost pressure almost instantly.

And I say again, the lag difference of the A/Rs are practically NIL. With, AT LEAST the .63 A/R, he'll be closer to reaching his goal at a more respectable amount of boost for the daily driver, especially with a higher redline.

30-32psi...ha, whatever man.
Please read.

Who cares what boost levels you run to obtain a desired hp limit. As long as those boost pressures fall within the efficiency range of the turbo, it doesn't matter. Horsepower puts wear on daily driver engines NOT boost pressure. Respectable amount of boost. Whatever man.

Besides, my tuner, John at Secret Services, thinks we'll hit 300whp around 17psi give or take a couple, on the SC50 with .48 and my setup. So he likely wouldn't NEED to run 20psi+ daily driven.
