Default Question: Experienced (engine)builders please

Recently I found a B17 crank(yeah, its a miracle). However, it has suffered a spun rod bearing(nooooh!). Is it possible to machine the crank and use a larger size bearing to compensate... Also, whats a good offer for a crank in this condition. Want to use it for LS/VTEC turbo. Thank-you-kindly-please

with factory bearings it really depends on how bad the damage is, but the
chances are that you wont be able to. Why would you want to destroke your
motor anyway? might as well get a b16a instead of an ls block.

I asked for pictures of the crank-that would've helped. So you figure its a no-go. The guy told me he took it to a shop and they said it could be done. ...Just not sure.... Kinda iffy buying parts that have problems, but if it can be compensated for.. ?
As far as why I want one(B17crank)-better R&S for a fully built LS/VTEC turbo aiming at 9000RPM. Less torque(than the B18B crank), but more RPM
means staying in boost longe-hopefully safer.Don't think the B18B crank would enjoy 9000RPM...

If you build it right, with a Girdle, etc...It'll survive 9k, Not Prob. Is this a Race Motor, or Street Motor? If its street, you should find a smaller turbo and shoot for 8k rpm...9k is alot and it squares the stressed on your parts, compared to 8k.

I guess you could say its a race motor in a street car. Everything is fully built...
I work at a drag strip so the car is going to make it down the track a couple times.
Anyhow, as far as compenstating the bearings... (+ or -)

How extensive was the welding and necessary work. Can any knowlegable machine shop perform the work.
Also, what is a good "offering" price for a crank in the previously mentioned condition??

i cant tell you about welding work, because no place around here will weld just
one journal, only the whole crank.

I wouldnt pay more than 50 for a crank that spun a bearing.
Afterall, you are looking at a potential paperweight

dont know if this is helpful or not, but i had a friend who had a ls/vtec (it was a b18a bottom and a gsr head) and he banged on it for two plus years. took it over 8 grand a lot and what not and the motor is still in one piece but its leaking oil out of the distributor area. he had it put together by RiceWorks near San Diego.
