Default Question about turbo spiking

I got a question. How does boost spiking work? What actually causes it and what can be done to stop it? A friend of mine had a gsr engine in his civic and he was driving it around today and said the boost spiked to 40 psi and it blew his engine now he wants to sell me his turbo kit cuz hes going with a k24 now, should i buy this kit or does something seem wrong?

At what boost does he normally run it at? Boost spikes can happen if the wategate sticks. Most systems spike a little as the wastegate catches up and regulates to the pressure it's set to. What kind of boost controller also? Could have an issue with that as well..

no boost controller and he runs at 10 psi, and he said that what happened was one of his tubes came off, not sure what tube he just said a tube came off.

Spiked to 40psi? Unlikely at 10 psi of normal operating boost. If the "tube" he's talking about is the wastegate control line it's possible that he spiked, but it certainly shouldn't be 30psi above normal.
