Putt Putt, Hesitation, almost like backfiring under boost....
Hey All..
I have had my greddy kit installed for about 2 weeks. The First week I had it I didn't have the following problem, which leads me to believe it is the weather.
Setup:
Greddy SOHC Kit with Blue Box
Greddy EVO Cat-Back
Problem:
In 2nd gear when i get on it, around 5500+ rpms i get a couple hesitations like it is backfiring, doesn't sound like detonation at all..NO pinging..
also, I am now making .5 bar of boost, is this because of the colder weather + denser air?
Thanks for tall the help!

You will rarely hear pinging on a turbo honda, it's a lot easier with a supercharger. If you are experience something similar to backfiring, that is generally a lean condition that causes a popping sound. If you are experiencing a hesitation without popping, that is generally too rich. Read your plugs if you are not taking your car to get tuned. I recommend tuning as the best money spent on your car.
Good Luck

This normally only happens when running higher boost but what kind of plug gap are you running... Even with aftermarket ignitions we were blowing out the spark with Brian's car running 24lbs. and a 0.028" gap... Took it down to 0.024-0.026" and everything was fine... Definately go with what Speedworks said and read your plugs, Good Luck
thanks fellas, im running stock boost and stock blue box (and this didn't happen in mild weather) so I am still totally puzzled, could this be gap then? I will pull the plugs and check em out..

If you do not have your plugs gapped to .030ish then you will blow out your spark when you hit 4 or so psi. I recommend running the NGK BCPR7ES (part number 3330).

i don't think that is necessarily true running this low of boost, i have NEVER seen it happen at super low boost before. However, on another note..my car IS now detonating..it seems to be going with a correlation of how cold the weather is. (-33 degrees today with windchill)

I run the same plugs at 0.032 at 15psi with no problems at all... So your theory isnt necessarly correct. But those plugs work nicely however. I buy them 2 boxes at a time and change them as necessary.

I guess my statement misled you guys. I originally intended to say that if you have your plugs gapped at the STOCK GAP then under boost you will misfire becuase the boost will blow out your spark. And by the way, i said .030ish ish meaning give or take .002
If you don't believe me, go outside, gap your plugs to a .044 and tell me what happenes around 4-5k rpms

Cold air should help to STOP detonation... Unless your going lean. Retard your timing two degrees or so, and close the gap up on your plugs. It might be time for some new cap / rotor / wires.
Good luck.
Good luck.
if youre afraid of blowing the spark out, get these:
they do get fouled easy though if you run rich in vacuum, they are also cleanable (sandblasting etc... several times)

as you can see, my setup im running stock boost and greddy blue box..
however, with really cold weather...air is more dense, more air + same amount of fuel = leaner....

anyone else with insight as to why NOW im detonating? is it REALLY the cold weather? it makes sense to me, cause im boosting .5 bar now cause the air is sooo dense.

mwahaha...problem solved....took out plugs and checked what they were previously gapped at.... .065"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats way outta even STOCK spec!
bought new plugs, gapped at .030 voila..not detonation..no funny hesitiation..thing just rips!
