what does detonation sound like?
I just installed a greddy turbo kit on my 00 si, with the stock greddy blue box, and everything else that I got with the kit. I dont have a boost controller, and i dont plan on getting a boost controller, I'm quite happy with what i have now. Anyhow, everyone says that the greddy blue box is good for stock boost only and it make the car run super rich with is good for me because this is a daily driver, not a racer on every weekend.
I'm wondering what does detonation sound like? is it loud, and can one really notice it off the bat? I only run supreme gas in my car, and I bought colder plugs (BKR7E's or something like that, i forget) I just want to know what detonation sounds like so if i ever hear it which i hope i dont, i can recognize it

ping ping knock knock ping ping.
That's about it. Not always loud, especially if you have a loud exhaust to hear it over.

someone once told me it sounds like nails in a can. But i have never heard it myself (i think ). Not to get off topic but I also heard of someging called the wisper 2000 from radio shack that you can hear detonation before even knock sensors can hear it. Anyone have a thread about this.

Like it was said before you cant always hear it. I put a JS Safeguard classic on my car, turns out I had been knocking for months. You are better of buying something like that, or setting up one of those head phone style listening devices.

for the people that recommend the J&S, is it actually fool proof? how about the piston slap with forged pistons? will the unit mistaken that for detonation and retard timing?

Is it possible to detonate at idle? I guess it would be but it isnt a common thing thats for sure. MY car makes that noise sometimes when it idles but I'm not sure if it's the downpipe connection or actual detonation??

Yeh the only time ive actually been able to hear detonation was on my friends all motor LSvtec w/ a full exhaust and a V8 work truck we had. On a turbo car w/ open wastegate or open downpipe if you can hear detonation you have already screwed things up haha.

I paid 250 for mine, it was used I got it right here on honda-tech from Sonny. I would try to search the classifieds. I know the new one costs 500 for the unit (the ultra not the classic, I dont think they sell the classic new anymore),
125 for the single display, and you have to buy a knock sensor.

Nothing is fool proof.
It's a damned good setup, and I think that active knock detection is a must for any turbo street car.
If you have piston slap, I sure as hell hope that you're not putting a lot of miles on your car.

Re: what does detonation sound like? (Bailhatch)
First time i heard detonation. It scared the hell out of me. I raced my buddy's turbo-R. I beat him the first time and we were going one more time. Both exhuast wide opend. It sounded like the forth of July. And popcorn. Sounded like after they do a big boom on the 4th then you hear th little bitty sparkles that car left over falling to the ground. I stopped when i heard his detonation. Scared the hell out of me.

No problem.
Preignition is when some of the material in the chamber ignites before the spark event. This can be due to several things, such as hot spots, or simply too much compression. Preignition is always bad, but the severity can vary quite a bit depending on the circumstances. Preignition can also become, lead to, or cause detonation.
Detonation is higher than usual cylinder pressures, caused by uncontrolled burning of the fuel and air mix. It can come in the form of two flame fronts colliding (when you have a flame front from perignition, and one from the plug, or two from different hot sports, for example) or it can come from the mixture combusting too quickly. This higher pressure will manifest itself as pressure oscillations (pressure waves) within the chamber. The averge pressure will often be the same as it normally would, the repeated pounding of the higher pressure waves can destroy lots of motor parts in short order.
Ping or Knock is the audiable effect of knock, which is caused by the block acting as a sort of speaker when the pressure waves pound it like back-door bubba.

I've heard different cars make all kinds of different noises. Some sound like marbles or bb's in a tin can (rattling), and some sound like bacon on a hot grill(sizzling).
