Pulling the head?
Okay guys since I am going to pull my head tonight does anyone have any good links or write ups on how to do it. I have an LS. This is my first import I have ever owned so this is new to me I am used to working on V-8's. I guess my main questions is how can I take it off with out having to get retuned, and how do I mark the timining on the motor? Any info would be great. Thanks again
The best help is a helms. That jhelped me go through it.
I took a sharp wire cutter thing and marked the ignition timing on the dist, and the cam cap (the thing it screws into)
when you put the head back on, make sure to use a lil air tool and get all the coolant/oil out of the hole for the stud. If there is liquid in there, you run the chance of it cracking.
also, if the head is going to be off for a long long time, put a little bit of auto tranny fluid in the clyinders to keep the rings from rusting. Just make sure to siphon it out if its still in there by the time you start it.
It helps a lot to put the intake mani on the head BEFORE you replace it on the block. Saves a lot of scratches on the hands.
mark the sensors if you are going to get confused, as well as vac lines/coolant lines.
if the head has a lot of miles on it, its a good idea to get it resurfaced and checked for cracks...as well as maybe new valve seats cut, the car will thank you.
if i think of any other advice, ill post it

Any other things to worry about? Like do I have to take the cams out or mark anything in there. Is there any order to take the stuff off in?
You are supposed to loosen the head bolts in two steps I believe so nothing warps. You should really get a Helms manual.......it has all the torque specs and shows you how to take it off systematically. I don't know about an LS, but with my GSR, you have to take the cams off to get to the head bolts.
When you reassamble the motor, refer to the marks on the back of the cam gears which indicate TDC. Also refer to the WHITE mark on the crank pulley to determine TDC.
After you think you have the timing belt on, crank the motor by hand 4 or 5 times, and make sure that the belt does not slip. It might help to loosen the tensioner as well.
Also make sure you keep the cam caps properly identified, and torque them down to spec. You dont want to go 5 or 10 ft/lbs over and have a problem.
Make sure to lube everything up with assembly lube, and it wouldnt hurt to douse the cams and rockers with oil before putting the valve cover back on.
is it a gsr? if so, people recommend to soak the lost motion assemblies in oil a day or so prior to reinstalling them. But i think its an ls, isnt it.

Thanks for the info when I take the head off should I have the motor at top dead center to make it easier when reassembling?
You were correct I have an LS motor.

Yes put it at top dead center for easier resetting of timing. I hate LS head jobs....done it 3 times already. I would rather do a VTEC head.
Be sure you keep the rockers in order you took them out. I got mine mixed up and it was not right when I started it. You need a feeler gauge as well to do your valve lash. You can find those tolerances in the Shitlin's manual.
