Default Polished my intercooler (not a AMAZING job but...)

Well I took the bumper off, and the IC and got to work with some 100 grit, then 320 grit.... then 600 grit, then finally some brillow pad and LOTS of meguirs aluminum polish... its not perfect by any meads, but definatly has a shine to it unlike before Sorry the picture isen't great but its the best I could do in my small garage on a rainy night

don't mean to be a dick, but theives are not that stupid....if they're smart enough to know what to steal from ur car, the're smart enough to know what an intercooler looks like..painted or not...the only person those of you who paint ur intercoolers black are fooling are urselves...unless you have some miracle way (or super dark tint) of also hiding the gauges in ur car, and muffling the sound of ur BOV, it's no use...

I want to do this, but im worried that the paint will act as an extra layer of insulation, thus ******* over the purpose of the intercooler...

you should be able to clearcoat the end tanks and tubes (not the fins) to preserve the look.

i dont know what a good paint for aluminum is, but someone knows...

oh and i saw a pretty cool WRX STI with a FMIC painted black

The paint doesn't act as an insulator. I've spoken to ASE certified turbo tech's, and they've all told me that painting it will do no harm to it. If you plan on painting it like what I did, buy high temp heat resistant paint. The radiator sits too close to it, which will cause all the heat.

And to the guy who said that painting it is pointless...I know that you can still see it, but, compared to a polished IC????? That polished one can be seen from a mile away in the sunlight. At least my black one isn't TOO noticeable. And my gauges are all hidden.

If your seriously interested in painting your cooler, take it to a radshop and have them spray it with rad paint. I did that to my Buick and it works great. Only cost me $5.

I physically cant believe that adding a layer of paint wont act as an insulator. Just like painting your calipers is an insulator, so is painting the intercooler.

If you want to hide it put a fine grille in front, air will always get by, but vision will be hindered.

Paint will effect the heat transfer. Hell, even different colors of the same type of paint have different effects on heat transfer. Pick up a thermodynamics or heat book sometime.

forgot to mention to all you SUPER SLEEPER people that like to rag on us that aren't so discrete when we do things to our car... My intercooler sits behind a grill, it doesn't hide much but if you don't know what your looking for then you won't notice it... I'll take a pic with the bumper on when I get some time.

Hey, I'm not hating on you guy. What you do to your car is your business, and what I do to mine it my own. I'm just stating a fact. I'm not trying to start arguements over this.

And for all you who think that paint is insulating heat on the intercooler. I want to know where this "so called heat" is coming from. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but, the sole purpose of an intercooler is to allow air into your motor, the exact same as a CAI on an all motor car. Yet, the AEM intake system is also painted. The only heat that is even close to being produced by the IC is from the radiator, and even that won't affect the IC. Painting the outside of the IC does nothing more then changing the color of it. The only harm paint will do to an intercooler is if you were foolish enough to paint the inside coils and clogged them up with paint. THEN, you'll disrupt the air flow into your motor.
