Default Which Pistons?

I am going to boost a B16A to eventually 25psi. Going rod/piston motor and going to tune it in about a month on a dyno to probably 10psi then slowly up it to 17 then going to retune it next spring. Anyways which brand of pistons to go with is my main question.

Wiseco std bore 9.0:1 compression
or
CP std bore 9.0:1 compression

Never dealt much with CP always known people to go with Wiseco. This is my first build and just checking options.

psi doesnt mean anything its HP you want to focus on. Anyways the Cp's or weisco are a good choice. you want to overbore though. if you can find an 81.25 then run them otherwise 81.5mm maximum on stock sleeves

Why bore it? I am shooting for eventually 450hp on 93 octane before head work.

because you need a certain amount of piston to wall clearence and if you dont bore it there generally will be to much clearence and it will be a loud oil burning blow by motor

Having machine shop check everything in my block and head to make sure it all checks out. I have always been told don't bore unless you have to.

when even you put in a new set of pistons you should bore just for roundness let alone PTW clearence which is very important, you cant just slap pistons in and hammer the crap out of it and if anyone says its ok they shouldnt be working on engines. 450whp is alot of power and all the right steps should be taken to ensure a healthy reliable engine

So even if the walls are 100% in round it should be bored over?

I disagree. if everything checks out and is in round there is no need for boring. i went with cp, however whenever i ordered my pistons they were on a pretty long wait, not sure if they still are or not. i think it was 6-8 weeks, and took them about two months to get to me but im not sure if your in a hurry or not. it could also be the fact that my pistons were a custom size for a stroker build.

I wont never run new pistons without new bore. Especially if forged pistons. Right now im running oversize vitaras.

I think people are confusing bore with hone. In many cases, if putting new pistons with the same bore, it should be at least honed (resurfaced) so that proper piston ring clearance issues are addressed, and the cylinder is "round" for the new pistons. B16A with stock BORE is ok, as long as the cylinders are round for the HONE.

Just hone it and use 81mm slugs I have done it a hundred times it won't be loud or burn oil you guys are smokin rocks... if the sleeves aren't damaged there is absolutly no reason to bore it unless you want a weaker sleeve. Also my choice of pistons best to worst arias, cp, je, ross, supertech, wiesco, srp the last two are complete garbage though the silicone rating is horrible... this is all based on 0-650hp builds I have personally built and tuned. If you are trying to make big power I would use arias or cp I use arias in everything I build when I have a choice.

Interesting. I've used JE and Wiseco in all my builds and doing great, 10 years running. I personally like Wiseco and CP

So it seems a matter of personal opinion on pistons. I think I will try out some CP pistons and see how they do. It's only $16 more.

And I am going to Hone it, would never think to NOT Hone, but bore seems a little much.

Honestly the wisecos aren't the worst but they are a really light and cheaper piston to use in a high hp engine imho... je is up on my list but this is based on my personal opinion and I'm biased towards arias. Anyone will tell you to use what your engine builder and or tuner advises.

I have supertech's in my motor right now running 375 whp on stock sleeves bored to 81.50mm and honed with a 4 thousandths clearance ptw. These are extremely good pistons and have an extremely good price. I love em.

I have always heard that Supertech is kind of cheaper end stuff, was going to run the valvetrain but then heard about how cheap their stuff is made, true or false?

The only brand I haven't heard anything bad about has been CP thus far, everything else has had a lot of people on both sides CP has only been good.

I'm running a full supertech valvetrain...i've never heard of supertech making cheap stuff. The pistons are supposedly Mahle pistons. I love my motor and it was built really well.

All my other friends run CP pistons in their motors and the pistons aren't the things that go wrong.

one of the lowest expansion forged pistons i know of is from mahle. even it requires .0025min for pwc.

how are you guys dropping forged pistons in a stock block? factory pwc is under .0020

cp ships their low compression pistons with 0.035" ptw clearance built in.

I would and did bring the pistons with the block to my machine shop and have them measure the pistons and bore/hone according to the size of each piston and what ptw clearance I wanted.
