I used swaintech for me NA engine. Two coatings, ceramic on the top and some sort of Teflon on skirts. It wasn't all that expensive either.

Coatings are counter productive. Depending on the coating, some trap heat and most eventually wear off. There are no upsides. I wouldn't recommend them at any cost but we still have customers demanding it.

I have used swain in the past for top and skirt coating.

Wiseco pistons come from the factory with a skirt coating.

I just saw on Facebook, that Bisi was talking about all the advantages of coatings. That "all engines, fi or na, can benefit from ceramic coatings". Am I mistaken?

Ive always used ceramic coating on my pistons for extra insurance against heat.

I was gonna quote you before you reply on this.

I used Wiseco coated pistons before, the coating got erased with the oil I used during installation. I think its a waste of money.... also if it did serve a purpose why did they put the W in the coating, leaving the W uncoated?

People will make recommendations for products that will help their bottom line. I don't do that and people seem to appreciate the honesty. I've turned customers away from countless products they don't need over the years and I've been doing this since 1997. Is it the smart thing to do? Maybe not, but I think it comes around full circle.

IMO, coated pistons offer no upsides whatsoever. Coated skirts do but are limited to a reduction in friction.

The vast majority of coatings are designed for either scuff resistance or friction reduction. Check out Abradable Powder Coating; it's been around since 2000 and is the only coating specifically designed for clearance control. It is fuzzy as sprayed. You build it tight (too tight). During initial operation (break-in period), each piston laps itself to fit each bore. When there is just enough room for the perfect oil film to form, the mating surfaces can no longer touch and the wear stops. Now you have the lowest friction oil film and tightest possible clearance for each piston in each bore. Pistons rock less so the rings stay square to the bore to seal better and minimize wear.
