Default Is This Pinging or Knocking.

2000 ITR with DRAG 3 kit @7 Psi of boost, not tunned and stock bottom end, timming retarded 2 deg.

When I'm at WOT and going at it i here a rattle from my engine bay...checked all pipes and seemed fine, not touching or hitting anything. How loud would pinging or knocking actually be?!? am I mildly pining or knocking?!?! did a compression test and got good #'s. Running rich with vortech 12:1 FMU. How do i Check or pining or knocking again?.

Thanks.

if the ratle like you say happen in 3rd and 4th in top end then yes its maybe detonation
you need to retard almost 1 deg per psi whit that kind of compression
so 7psi =6-7deg retard you shoud be fine whit that

Sounds like detonation to me. Becareful because you don't want to lose your motor

Retard More....i retarded it 2 deg and when went 4 it felt really sluggish when daily driving...compression is 10:6:1 stock B18C5 compression...i retard more timming.
Any more opinions on my situation?

Sounds like you need more fuel. Have you dyno'ed it? If you haven't you should give your motor to me before you damage it anymore.

If you hear that rattle sound it's too late. Your engine has been damaged. It may not be very much but if you keep doing it, the motor will certainly have oil control problems pretty soon. I speak from experience.

Sounds like you have the cash so get to the dyno before it's too late. WIDE BAND!

Lower the boost and retard the timing a bunch. See if it still does it.

are you running a btm? and still using stock injectors? you're probably way too lean for that compression.

I dont know why more people dont retard their timing the correct way by using one of these, most people just yank the distributor around
i guess folks dont understand the seriousness of timing issues...

Whats a BTM?!??! and yes stock injectors....i have a FMU 12:1 vortech, and yes i used a timming light...the plugs are gapped at .28 and when on the dyno i read rich like hell...compression numbers came out fine, i checked it like 3 times already, and my a/f guage reads rich (i know there not accurate but it give me an idea). Also how loud would detonation be?? from a audible scale of 1-10? Also the begining signs of loss if compression?!?

Thanks

Boost timing master...I'll have my 6btm for sale in a few weeks (hopefully) if you're still in the market for one. It uses a pressure sensor to retard the ignition a preset amount per psi of boost.

I would say that you should make it so you don't boost (open up the flapper if internally gated) or take out the spring if externally gated and see if it still makes the sound at WOT, if it does, then either your motor is completely falling apart, or it is a heat-shield or something. My heat shield rattles like a **** depending on the ambient temp...

I know I should really go on a dyno with a 02 wideband but...

Just for the record.... I have a stock B16A2, I am running 5-6psi or boost,I have 550cc injectors, and I have a MSD BTM set at 1.5 degre of retard for each PSI. Fuel management is a SMC+.

Should I be scared of pinging or detonation?
