Default Pics of JG block/work area.

I need some advice on my little shop area here in the basement.

I know it would be easier if I had an engine stand, but anybody assemble an engine witout one?
Next, what kind of rags should I use? Old towels that are CLEAN? or should I invest in some special lint free cotton cloth, etc? Next week i will be starting the build...cant wait

I have done it without a stand.... a litle weird but that is all, as for the towels i would say Yes By some Lint free and static free towels.. they help with the clean up a lot.. and leave nothing on the walls .ect. make sure u lube everything.. When i did i myseft i was told to dip the piston in oil b4 in put it in the cylinder.. . And i cleaned the **** out of everything.. torque it all down.. take your time.. and your will be fine.. the motor i did was a b16 . put ls piston on b16 rods... and new rings and bearings.. the motor now as almost a 1,000 miles on it and it strong.. for a in garge re built that cost me parts online.. Have fun..

get a stand at pepboys...$30. I would just use regular towels, no need to get anything special. clean up you block before you start working and you will be fine.

I read on ENDYNE's site that they use those paper shop rags (the ones that come in a box) mainly cause you can, and should, always be using a relativly new/clean rag.

As for your work area I had to laugh when I saw it cause it looks exactly like mine. I have an engine stand but I'm not using it, just using a sturdy table.

I like the paper shop rags, also. Helps everything stay clean. Use a garbage bag to cover. Even though your block looks clean when it comes from the machine shop, it's not. Wash it with soap and lots of flowing water. Then blow dry and coat steel parts with wd40. Engine stand makes life a lot easier.

one big advice....don't put the head and tranny on, then try to bring it upstairs

I saw a picture of a guy that did that and he was struggling

no no...I have a nice garage outside, but the temps are anywhere from 5 to 40degrees this time of year. I didnt think that would be suitable because of the condensation aspect. The head and tranny probably wont be touched until I can figure out a way to yank my car out of the snowbank, and get in into the garage.

i cut the mangled front end off, and fabricated a mini tube chassis in front of the shock towers. One thing I didnt do was include a tow hook..DOH!! So ya getting the car back in the garage is really going to suck
Oh ya, we dont have a pep boys up here yet. Its coming im sure. Adance auto and autozone only..

It's good to have an engine stand when you are rebuilding engine. I would suggest you invest in one. It runs around $50.

I just got my engine stand last week from harbor freight. $49.99 + 5.00 shipping. I couldn't image having to build an engine without one.
And....it goes grest with a bedroom suit. LOL

When I was putting the 460 together for my mustang I did some of it on a table, all I used was some those paper shop towels that you can buy in huge boxes. It worked out OK, but it would have been a lot quicker using my engine stand.

Oh Ive heard, trust me. My block looks stoutly built, so Im gonna push it. Whats the worst that could happen? It would pop or split a sleeve. I would rebuild using GE or RS...simple as that
