Default Overheating and Running Lean Help!?!?!

Setup:
b18c
arias 10:1
pauter rods
boostwerks topmount manifold
sc61 turbo
big fmic
2.5 bar map sensor
C&R radiator
12" slim fan
running on a basemap on a p72 obd1 ecu made by Jason (st00pid).

Problems:
we tried to set the base ignition timing. We let the car warm up then turned it off, put the jumper in and setup the timing light and the car was only at 5*. It's supposed to be at 18*. So as we were advancing it we had max out the dizzy adjustment to get it there which isn't right. Then we noticed the engine started running hot about 250* when it's only supposed to stay around 210*. And it didn't shoot up to 250 like it would if there was a hg leak or detonation or something; it just kinda gradually rose to that after about 10 minutes of idle. The weird thing is the fan kicked on but then turned off before the engine cooled back down so that's really weird too. The fan should've stayed on with it running that hot. Then we realized that I was running a little lean too and we even have my fuel pressure set at like 50psi. The stock heat range plugs are in there right now so I guess that might be an issue. I'm going to try putting some colder ones in and hope that lowers the det. temps and fixes both the temp and lean issues. If not, I'm clueless.

Sorry for the long read but any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure both cams are set?

I think the cams are set, both at 0. I'll double check that though.

Ok, so far I need to bleed my coolant system first. I was informed that the ECU will pull timing if the car is running hot which would explain why I was having to max out my dizzy to get it to the 18* desired timing.

Yeah, we went to work on it last night and got it started and waited for it to warm up so we could bleed the cooling system. Well, it was still reading pretty lean (16-17 on the plx). At one point it seemed to fix itself and went down to 14-15 but then went back lean to 16-17 about 30 seconds later. So we turned it off for a minute. Then we tried to start it again and it wouldn't start. It was cranking, and getting spark but not starting. So that would leave it to be a problem with the fuel. Well, the fuel pressure was reading fine ~50psi and there weren't any signs of malfunction any where. So we pull the plugs and they've got some fuel build up on the tips. Then we look down at the cylinders and they've got a decent amount of fuel build up as if the engine was running really rich. But how could this be with the plx reading it as running lean? So we are thinking that the basemap must be the issue. Jason did it on one of those 20 yr old UV chips which my brother (electronics professional) says go bad really fast and are pieces of junk. So, that's where we're at today. Any insight?

Is your O2 sensor good for sure?

(I had the same issue with the lean-fix itself-lean again at idle. I had the psi @ 50 (before the rail) as well. I hadn't really thought much about it though. I turned it down to 40 and walked away, seemed to idle smoother. I'll look into it tonite)

Well I've been talking to tony1 about it (he's been really cool about helping me) and he says that I shouldn't trust the plx wideband. I've read other places that they are POS's so I'm going to back my fuel pressure back down and hopefully that fixes the issue.

Well, we switched out the o2 sensor with one we know is working off of another car and came across the same problem. It's still reading lean even though it's running so rich there is raw gas dripping out of the exhaust. And we still aren't able to get the timing right without advancing the dist. all the way. This makes me think that the basemap is bad. What do you think?

Figured it out. The chip on the basemap went bad...

20 yr old UV chips ftl...

We got a better chip and put a map on it and it works good now!
