Default over heating problem *help* top mount

its a fresh motor 0 miles, motor idles fine and then about 10 to 15 mins the overflow tank starts over flowing and bubbling radiators smokin a little, fans on, no leaks,ect.. and the temp gauge is all over the place, when i give it some gas the temp gauge shoots right up to hot and then back down to the middle like a damn tach this ***** wierd. i took the the thermostat out to see if it would over heat and it did the same thing. what im wondering is would my downpipe cause this if its to close to my radiator. heres some pics and tell me if you think its to close. it is touching the radiator but very little at the bottom . i was thinking of wrapping the DP but would that be enough
the motor is
b20/vtec
85mm bore wisco pistons
pauter gsr rods
gsr crank
GoldenEagle HD sleeves
skunk2 stg 1 cams
h22 LMA's
oversized valves
P&P gsr head
BBK intake mani/TB
top top mount manfold
precision SC6176
82a/r exhaust
etc. ect. ect...

Have you try bleeding the system? air pocket in the coolant would cause the temp to shoot up and calm down.

did you leave the cap off the rad when you started it to make sure all the air is out of the system?

at first the cap was on when it over filled the tank and then i refilled the radaitor and left the cap off and then the water was shooting out the radaitor after running for awhile

also i was running just water no antifreeze and there is no bleeder valve on this head so what are other ways of bleeding it, just let it run with the cap off right

When you fill the system, fill it up cold, start the motor, tap the throttle from under the hood a few times... also try tapping on the lower radiator hose.... you will see bubbles come out.. when it gets tot eh point of the water at the top of the rad being hot, close it up and let it warm untill the fan comes on a second time, then shutoff the motor.

once cool, take the cap off and fill one more time, start watch it drop and add a hair, then u should be good.

Tis always the procedure I follow... and I don't get air pockets.

I had a similar problem until I made a block off plate which sits beside the rad directing air flow through the rad.

looks like u have a bigger problem somewhere or some air pockets. i have a fan from Advanced auto and my car has never overheated with it. stays right under 190 on hot 100+ days, BTW wat kind of spark plug wires are those?

I had the same problem last year. The car would over heat after driving for a long time and at the end of every 1/4 pass. I have the same set-up (top mount, ebay aluminum radiator, and the dp is about 1/4 from the radiator) My pepboys fan took a dump so I put in a FAL fan and never had a problem again. Try changing the fan.

change the radiator cap its probably sticking thats why the overflow tank is bubbling!!

it happened to me and i changed it and it worked fine after that

maybe try mounting the fan to a pusher style fan? check the coolest to see if there is any air pockets like everyone has said. an air pocket could be the cause of the temperature shooting up and down.

once you over heat your thermostat is cooked, id change it to a 160 temp jackson racing, move to a slim pusher fan and bleed the system out. if that doesnt work id start checking for coolant leaks that can be causing air pockets or headgasket.

pretty much everything they've said so far is good. at this point you can't even drive the car. Change the radiator cap to a new racing one. Def change the thermostat, i use a 190degree. i was told by a few of the engine builders that its very essential to do so. bleed the air system. Buy thermotec exhaust wrap and hook up that down pipe. IT SHOULD NOT EVER TOUCH THE RADIATOR. buy a heat shield, make one, take one. anything. block the heat from the downpipes to the radiator. Oh and wire the fan to a switch or to ignition turn on and make sure its always running. GOOD LUCK

Agree with everything your saying except leaving the fan on all the time. Instead lower the fan turn on point in your EMS or purchase a fan switch that has lower activation point.

It's weird that it's happening in such a short amount of time of just idling. Are sure that your mechanical and base ignition timing is correct? Do you have any form of data logging?

Actually they work very well, but some times a fan shroud is needed.
