OT:sorta.....Anyone who knows DSM's in here?
Hey guys I may soon consider the purchase of another car which I am leaning towrds alot is a 1st gen DSM, either talon eclipse or laser. As far as compression numbers anyone in here might know what numbers to look for to kae sure engine is somewhat healthy even though I have already been told numbers aren't a good referrence to go buy to ensure an engines health but I find it better than nothing. Thanks guys and do yo know of any flaws this car in any of the above models mentioned. Thanks in advance,
Nick

The trannies in those cars suck. If it is not smooth shifting then the tranny is going south.
Next weakness in the car is the centre diff in AWD models
compression in that car is 8.2:1 look for numbers 170+ (like that means anything)

If U R getting an AWD replace the center diff and rear end to the later 95/6/7 model, they have a 4 bolt rear instead of the 3 bolt rear that is always breaking.

the 90-91 had the 3-bolt and the 92-up has the 4-bolt u can use... check the compression... make sure the turbo is still good...anything leaking?

Thanks man, well I am just doing my research on what to look for on the car besides the obvious so all your help is appreciated, I was also contemplating a civic hatch w/B18c but the dsm potential is just to tempting to pass up and alot more cost effective as far as power.

The CR on the '90-'94s is 7.8:1. For '95 and up they changed to 8.5:1. Also, like it was said earlier, the 4-bolt rear end was on '92 and up. However, SOME early '92s had the 3-bolt rear end. All '92s and up have the 2-piston calipers. I wouldn't worry about the engine on these things since they're almost bulletproof. The rest of the car though is questionable.
