Default OT: Been practicing with the welder

Guess what kind it is?

I bought a DIY exhaust kit from Mike (KTeller8 ) and have been practicing on muffler shop scraps. I don't get much garage time these days, so I've been trying to do 2-3 weld joints per night. I've got about 5 nights of practice so far.

Any tips?

Sonny

Would be nice to know exactly what kinda welder you used because it looks like you need to go up on the voltage and down on the feed speed if you have a standard mig welder. My .02 (I have a miller mig welder)

I'm using an oxy/acetylene gas welder.

#0 tip
4 psi of acetylene
8 psi of oxygen
1/16" filler rod

I've been experimenting with various types of flames. The really hot flame seems to work best as getting a good weld, but it is also the easiest to burn holes with.

I wish I had done a little more research on this before I started. This aluminized muffler piping sucks.

I was always told that welding stainless steel with a gas torch was not possible. Richard Finch's "Welding Handbook" states that it is possible for small thicknesses of metal, but even then, the weld is prone to contamination.

I found a site that sells flux for use with stainless steel gas welding. It's cheap, too. Oh well, live and learn.

Wow, those welds are really great. OxyAcetylene welding is really tricky. Very good for only 5 nights experience.

Looks good!

Gas welding is more similar to TIG welding than MIG or ARC in how you do it, so after you get your TIG setup your gas experience can carry over a little.

Nice! That looks a hell of a lot better than the guy who just welded up my new muffler.

I've been reading up on welding too. seems like I can weld aluminum and SS on my mig. all I have to do is get the correct mix of gas and the proper wire and thats it.

Welding stainless is easy, but if you plan to weld somethin together that will take high heat over a long period of time dont do it. Stainless has a different expansion rate under heat than even stainless welding wire. Use mild steal and ceramic coat it or find a local shop that does top notch coatings for a good price (ie normal ceramic coloring, ceramachrome, chrome, etc.)

A lot of people are using stainless on turbo manifolds... sorry but that is a huge mistake for longterm life of a manifold.

For people that are new to welding...
MIG is a linefed to gun welder that supplies DC voltage and gas at the same time through a nozzle that you just point and feed to the metal
TIG is the same premise but you can find many different setups that allow you to flow the gas seperately and get really smooth strong welds that are way superior to MIG and also include flux cored metal wires that will pull heat to the metal faster

Ivan, get 35 gauge aluminum wire, and a tank w/100% argon gas, make sure to clean the gun feed wire, and change your tip if you dont have 35 gauge already
Also get a tweeko gun
