Default oil return tech

okay, ive heard various stories about **** breaking because of an oil return line being flanged right into the middle of an oil pan... yes at the top, but in the center horizontaly.... its better to flange the oil pan on the left hand "shallow" side.. correct? explain why please.

tapping on the shallow side will give you direct straight down path, but there are hardly enough room to weld the oil pan bung and not too mention that the oil may accumulate in that area.
