Oil consumption??
Hey guys. Is it normal for a FI Honda engine to use a lot of oil? My engine is a 95 GSR with JE 9.0:1 pistons, Crower rods, GE block guard, and everything else is basically stock. I found myself adding about half a quart of oil at about 500 miles. May be because of it so damn cold here and I'm running Mobil synthetic 10W30? Any insight? Some of my friend here locally say that normal. Just want another opinion. Thanks!!
i run 5w30 during winter time. when did this start to happen, was this recently rebuilt and were you running syntetic the whole time? any leaks around the engine bay or under the car?
Never had a problem. I have been using Mobil 1 5W30 for 109 000 miles, and 35 000 of those with a turbo on my D16Y8. What is the clearance of your pistons, and what shape are your rings in?

Compression test may not tell all. Oil control ring issues could cause oil usage over a quart every 300 miles and the compression be at spec and within 1% of all the cylinders. I just rebuild a honda motor like that.
Also, no engine should be built so loose to use that much oil for the street.

So, worse come the worst can I just replace all the rings?

If you damaged teh rings due to detonation, it would be the top ring and it would show up in a compression test. It could even be something stupid like a clogged PCV valve.
