noob to turbo question!
Alright so every car ive had ive always built NA LS/vtec ive never went turbo before.
ive got a 95 ej1 with a d16z6 swap, and i also have a 91 DA i was going to swap the LS in and do another NA ls-v build but i figured this time i would just keep the d16 in it, sell the DA, and turbo the civic.
my question i have here, is my buddy has his stock turbo off his 2003 Evo 8. he said it has the evo 9 hot side? not sure what that means but he said it gave him more power before he upgraded turbo's. he said he would sell me that turbo for $250 so i figured that was kind of a steal. im just wondering is this thing going to spool alright on the d16? will it be able to make decent power? this is also my first SOHC engine ive ever had. so i am pretty new to this.
my plan is to do a mild build, just pistons/rods/headstuds etc no sleeves or anything.
what do you guys think?
Dan.

Re: noob to turbo question!
also, should say i have the goal to break 250whp. not looking to make 9000000hp like everyone else. trying to keep it a realistic goal, just a fun DD car.

beleave the evo 8 turbo is a 16g so it will do good down low and mid but slightly choke up high.. Good for about 280ish hp and you can use some dsm 440 or evo 550 injectors for dirt cheap.

Re: noob to turbo question!
An evo 8 turbo is a 16G, but it is a newer design and nuch nore efficient than the older evo3 16g's, plus the evo 9 10.5 hotside added, this turbo is probably capable of well over 300 whp, they flow much better than the older 16g's.
You need T25 flanged manifold, then use a block off plate for the external wastegate hole in the manifold.
This turbo will not run out of breath at 7000 rpm, so your good to go there, it should be a very good turbo for a 250 whp street car....and yeah, if its in good shape then $250 is a great price.

My bad....I didnt realize the flange was different.......There is no specific manifold for this set up, you will have to use a T25 manifold, with this adapter plate to make it work:

The manifold for dsm style turbo flanges are very rare but, 16g real mhi turbo's are extremely good. I had one on my old awd 1g laser held 20psi from 1500rpm till redline for thousands and thousands of miles very good reliable turbo's.

Don't forget you need to hook up water lines to this turbo, not just oil lines.
And you will need either a tubular evo8 02 housing to custom fab a downpipe to, or a flange for the evo8 turbo to custom make a downpipe....

Re: noob to turbo question!
Easy answer...Dont buy it.
There are better applications for you're DD goals. The cost of modifying it and getting everything to work isnt going to be worth the efforts...Pick a manifold with a T3 flange then choose a turbo based upon goals and what youd like to do with the car. FOr 300whp you could get a t3/t4oe 50 trim and there are other choices as well (budget would help narrow that down). E85 you will need bigger then 440cc for 300+whp, heck even on pump gas 300whp is maxing those injectors out. Get some ID 1000's for future growth and to make youre tuner happy
