Default nonintercooled during the summer?

i've heard that it is fairly safe to run the greddy kit on a non intercooled sohc, but is this still true for the summer time? Even with the increased heat? Would it be necessary to have an intercooler?

it is always best to run an intercooler no matter what time of year.

personally I wouldn't run a turbo w/out an intercooler, but if you must don't run more than 5-6psi, your HP will drop w/ the summer heat as all cars do but I doubt you will detonate in summer if you are not the rest of the year

it should be fine but I dont see why you wouldn't spend the extra 40-50 bucks for a dsm sidemount + piping that intercooler would be great for your setup and it wont burn a hole in your pocket.

I have been running my SOHC Y8 with a greddy kit for 4 years without an intercooler and haven't had any problems.

The key like they said above is not to run it more than the stock boost. The preset 5 psi is all that you should probably run without an intercooler.

the intercooler itself is around that price, piping of course will cost a little more. I spent a little under 100 bucks for all of my piping from JCwhitney(2 1/4" aluminum mandrel bends). I also had a lot left over....
its well worth the money imo

I agree. i ran my SOHC kit for a year w/o an intercooler and during the summer where temperatures reached 105F daily. I WOULD NOT recommend it! I experienced no detonation, but the lag was horrendous and there was absolutely NO power. I couldn't even turn on my A/C around town because it sucked away too much power from the engine. Couple that with a turbo that's spewing hot air into your intake manifold, and it's a reciple for acceleration slower than a Geo Metro running on 1/2 a cylinder.

EDIT for spelling.
