new turbo, couple issues, smoke ....
ok, just put on my t3/t04e.
now here is what's going on
im have greyish smoke when i let off the throttle. in or out of boost. but only if i can hear the turbo spooling. dont know if that helps. i am running a open downpipe right now, and only 6psi, which i have yet to hit till i figure out what is going on.
at the end of the downpipe is a faint amount liquid, oil maybe, very very small amount. so i took the downpipe off thinking my seals where messed up on the turbo and it was leaking oil. but there is no oil on the other end of the downpipe or the exhaust side of the turbo. so i dont know wtf is going on. might just need tunned or something.
here is pick of my oil return line does it look aight.

Its probably normal. Hard to say without seeing it.
Open downpipe your going to see a lot of liquid and smoke come out.
It could be that you are running really rich too.

yea i was thinking that. im in the process of building the exhaust right now.
i just need a resonator and i think im set.
i dont see how i could be running rich though. i mean i have no exhaust. wouldnt that lean me out.

Depends. Whats your fuel setup?

From the angle of the picture it looks like your return line goes down then up to the oil pan. Is that right or is it just the angle? Having a return line like that is BAD BAD BAD. The oil flows back to the oil pan via gravity. Gravity is not to friendly with things just going up that have mass. So long story short, if it does go back up you are asking to blow an oil seal.

it's a new turbo. i mean. 15 miles on it. if that. hit boost 3 times maybe. is this normal for a new turbo.
my fuel setup is a honda s200b. but it was tunned for a greddy kit at 12psi. so it's prolly way off.
as for the return line. i dont think it goes back up. if it does. if it does. its a super small amount. less then 1/4 inch.
is that aight. i guess i will need to measure it.

You want the line so the oil flow is not impeded. If it goes back up the returning oil has to push oil that is sitting in the 'upward slope' of the line back into the pan.
Get a clear hose and pour water into it and cap the end part off with your thumb. Hold the hose straight up from the top then the bottom so that it slopes down then back up. You will notice after the water drains out there will be water left over in the upward slope part of the line. This is similar to how the return line works, but keep in line you have a constant flow of oil. I could get technical here with the stuff I learned in my Fluid Dynamics lab but I think you get the point.

i really dont think it is going at a uphill streem. look at the 2nd pic. you can see it always going down..
i can change that though, how do you suggest i run my return line with what you see in the pics.

I was thinking the same that your oil return line is not straight. I had problems with my turbo smoking and after i fixed the return line, smoking went away. make sure your oil return line has no bends where it can stop the oil flow.

Re: new turbo, couple issues, smoke .... (25 PSI CRX)
his oil return line looks fine.
No bends, and its not pointed up. That shouldn't be the problem.
I bet the problem is he is tuned for 12psi and running 6psi + the open downpipe situation.

i can reroute my oil return line to make it better, but how..
the exhaust should be on this weekend. should i keep the boost down till it's tunned.
or would i be ok to put it like 8-9 psi till im tunned.
5-6 is just plain boring.

I think it's your tune based on the above info. It was tuned for a smaller turbo at a different psi with a full exhaust. To me, that means your basically running around untuned. Maybe I'm wrong, but you see guys saying to get a retune even if you just change manifold brands....Even if the manifolds are of the same style.

Re: new turbo, couple issues, smoke .... (symba)
im for sure going to get it retuned. no question there.
im just trying to get as many of the little issues out of the way before i spend money at the dyno.
thanks for you help guys. looks like its nothing to worry about, i just need retunned.
any idea on the return line and how to make it better if needed.

it's tapped rather high really, but the removeable plate inside the oil pan. it's right above that about a inch.

Your oil feed looks large, what size is it? I know of a few people who got smoke from the supply line being to large.

You should use a -3 or -4 for the feed line with the proper sized inlet. The large lines will too much volume when the turbo isn't spooling. I and my friends with T72/T70/HKS T51 KAI use the inlet adapter below with a -4 line. The pic below is a $10 oil inlet adapter HKS. It is also available in 90* for clearance deficient setups.
