Default new build compression test low

My buddy just built his motor with cp pistons (81.5) 9:1 and eagle rods with a cometic head gasket (.40) with a b16 head when we did a compression test on the new motor we got 1-2-3-4- 160-160-160-148 now the engine wasn't very hot just warm, and the throttle was open. on #4 when we added oil it went to 160. the motor has 2 miles on it, would those # go up after the break in? also for some reason the car runs very rich to the point where the plugs are black. the timing is set at 16 and the fuel press is 45 with vac. any ideas? ty

I believe it takes a little while for the piston rings to fully seal on new motors. Just keep monitoring it and if it doesnt get better after 1500 miles then there is prolly a problem... good luck

it does take a little time for the rings to seat, and when they do your compression numbers will go up. also if you let your car come to normal temps then the numbers should also go up a little bit

THe rings have to seat. Give it some time, EVERYONE'S BEEN TELLING YOU THIS.

BTW: When you're breaking in your engine you dont want it to run too rich.

If you run a motor on a new build rich, the excess gasoline in the cylinders will wash off the oil between the rings and the cylinder walls. It will wear the hone marks off the cylinder walls and cause too much cylinder to wall clearance. As a result your rings will not seal, you will lose compression and burn oil

It is very important to break in a motor with a good base map and turn off the car if it runs in limp mode or runs excessively rich.

Earl had a very good post on this and properly breaking in a motor. You should tow your car to a competant tuner if in doubt before ruining your motor.

80% of the break in happens within the first half hour if that. it's very important that you run a god mixture and rev the engine when you are supposed to. Don't start that engine until you get to a tuner. those compression tests mean nothing right now. After about three ours i would check and they should be respectable. GL and let us know what happened

ok here's an update we turned the fuel press down (39 with vac) and check the valve lash, they were way off. We got the car to idle like a kitten. we didn't do another compression test yet, soon as it's done well post the results.

oh by the way the car is running off a tune done by boosted hybrid for my previous setup. I know it's not for this motor but it's a good base map
