Default New boost setup has some hickups

I recently boosted my LS. She spits quite a bit on top end. Way too much fuel it seems. The previous owner of the kit on his LS had it tuned for 9-11lbs. He couldn't remember exactly. I've got it sitting at 6 just to play it safe. Could this be the backfire issue? New ignition, no vac. leaks, boost leaks, ect. Only other thing I can think of is I need a new FITV. Will be turning up the boost tonight, just wanted some feedback first.

How is it fueled???

If it was tuned for 9-11 leave it there... running overly rich can cause just as severe damage as running lean... obviously it won't detonate but you can wash the oil off the cylinder walls and score the crap out of them... you can also get too much gas into your oiling system which effectively ruins the oil.

Fast IDLE thermo valve is most likely not going to be affecting your top end.

Sounds like you're on management that has fixed fueling and it's fueling for 9-11lbs and you're only providing 6...

That's what I was hoping to hear. I run the NGK7s on the stock gap to keep it cool. I also have a 255 with DSM 450s. I will probably also change the oil while I'm at it. Forgot all about that one. Thanks again.

How was the car tuned, and on what ems? Sounds like your using the tune from his car on yours. If I were you i'd most likely take it somewhere and have your motor with that turbo kit tuned properly. No two motors are the same.

It was on crome pro on a mustang dyno. Is that what you meant?

Sounds like it was tuned properly, but it is still on a different motor....but like the previous guy talked about plug gap. Maybe run it a little bit smaller and see how that goes. Do you have a wideband o2 gauge to see what a/f's your running?

Will the smaller gap make it burn hotter? I well be getting it tuned, just due to location, it's a huge hassle. I'd rather wait 2 weeks when I get my new injectors, head, exhaust, ect.

No wideband just yet. I can smell the exhaust though. Definatley rich. Just pops when I hit full boost around 3800. I also retarded the dizzy on accident when I recently replaced it. I'll fix that tonight as well.

Shouldn't be using stock gap. you need a tighter gap to spark under pressure in rich mixtures. The spark plugs heat range will determine how hot they get/stay.

Proper gap is important.

Also not having your distributor timing set properly can throw your whole tune off. Sounds like you have a few problems you need to take care of and then get back to us.

I got new NGKs and gapped them to .028. Set the dizzy to "about" where it was at before. And I put the boost at 9lbs. Also changed the oil. It runs a ton better, but still backfires up top. I'll be taking it in about 2 weeks to just get a retune. Thanks for all your help. It seems like the more boost I run, the smoother it gets, but that is a big gamble on street tuning IMO.

What do you mean at "about" where it was? You need a timing light to set it exactly at 16 degrees.

I just set it at relatively the same position it was at before. It was -2 degrees when I got off work. I was in a hurry. My buddy is going to throw a lap top in the car when I get off. He's going to work on the crome just a little to try to get the popping to stop. Hopefully she doesn't go lean. I'm pretty sure I've seen this convo before right before someone blows their motor.

You need a timing light to make sure its at 16 degrees. Do you know how to do that? If its off a couple degrees its gonna throw your whole timing map off.
