need help w/ shiftlinkage and pin
d16y8
okay, well my friend's car is having rod issues, so we started to pull the motor, everything is off but i can't get the pin that holds the shiftlinkage to the tranny out. i've tried everything...i was thinking about disassembling the shiftlinkage from the rear, but we wouldn't be able to take it completely out still attached to the tranny...any ideas?

You need to push it out with an 8mm pin punch. Just put the punch against the pin and hit it with a hammer. Put some grease or oil on the end of the punch before you start so it will be easier to remove from the shift linkage when you push out the pin.

you need more clearance....I didn;t have too much clearance either....
here, use a screwdriver bit, and hold it with vice grip that way you have more room to swing the hammer....it's not how hard you hit it, but the momentum is what's gonna get it out....
a lot of cusswords will help too...

Punch and hammer usually work just fine, but i've had one where it just didn't want to cooperate with me. After several size punches, lots of cursing, and countless minutes under the car just staring at it i just decided to unbolt it from the shifter itself and yank it with the motor/tranny at the same time. Depending on what hoist you have if you unhook the shiftlinkage from the shifter itself and leave it attached to the tranny you can pull it with the motor. After that you have all the room in the world to bang on it

easier to do if you buy a set of roll pin punches that are meant for taking out roll pins like the one you're fighting with.

there is a spray product called PB Breaks Loose. Get some at your local parts store. Spray it all around it and tap on the metal to let it seap in. It does a great job at loosening stuff up. A 10mm bolt works great too....Mike
dont use a torch on it as you run the risk of warping the shift selector and other parts in the trany. They dont like heat in there.

For me, I gave up on the pin and punch cuz I couldnt jack up the car any higher so no room to swing that hammer upwards (gravity sucks). I ended just unbolting the whole linkage and shifter and pulled it all out from the bottom

i couldnt get mine out either, was around 12" off the ground too. used the punch and a big *** mallet and that didnt work. so we jacked up the car higher, then i had more room to swing and it slowly worked its way out. put the punch in vice grips too, smacked my hand sooooo hard with the mallet, doesnt feel good at all.

ooh, you can use one of the AC bolts too, it's not threaded at the end, so you won;t messed up the thread....
remember, it's not how hard you hit, but is your momentum that counts..

You can pull the motor out with the linkage still attached. I had the same problem when i pulled my D16 out...
Just unbolted it from the shifter and when i was pulling it out i moved the hoist back as i was lifting it out. Came right out with no real problems...
Yellow circle is the shiftlinkage still attached to the tranny.... HTH

I got 2 words for ya: Air Hammer
I guess I'm just lazy! but I've never had a pin I couldn't remove with my air hammer (no matter how rusty it was) and they only cost about $20 for the tool....only downside is you need compressed air to opperate it.

mine was a pain in the *** too. iw as under the car with no room to swing. i used a BFH, pin punch, and pliers to hold the punch. isn't it a great feelign when it finally gives way?

Good job man...
For the life of me, i don't know how you guys did it with the cars on jackstands. I could'nt get a good swing on the sucker.
Plus i was afraid the damn car was going to fall. I had mine jackstands on the dirt and every now and then i would here a leg sinking into the ground... lol
