Name that wastegate!

Re: Name that wastegate! (Ej6andslow)
Looks like a Carcraft. At least that is the name of the company that either manufactured or distributed it about 7 years ago. They were common on air cooled VW's back then. I would not trust that WG... I have personallly witnessed a B18 trash 3 cylinders due to that gate. Unless the design has been radically improved since then, I really think it would be ill advised to even consider using it... take it apart and judge for yourself - the diaphragm is not a rolling diaphragm or even convoluted for that matter - it's just a flat cut piece of low grade silicone same as you would find inside an FMU. In the aforementioned B18 the WG valve shaft seized in the closed position, you know what happened next...

The pic you just posted is a Deltagate with a Carcraft billet top hat... check the cast base w/ the turbonetics logo on it... nothing more than a Deltagate with a cosmetically improved cap, internally it is the same as a Turbonetics unit. I don't know if the gate you originally inquired about is still available or not, but it was indeed sold by Carcraft in the 80's for air-cooled VW's and can be seen in the book "Turbomania" or something like that.

Well, here's what I can tell you. Don't hold me to this because it's been a long time, but I can say with 100% certainty that the cast iron base is identical to the unit that CC was selling back in the 80's. If I recall correctly the the diamond shaped flange is identical to exhaust port flange of the VW motor and the valve is actually a VW exhaust valve. The top hat underwent a revision. Originally it truely resembled a "top hat" as in something you'd wear on your head. Later they streamlined the cap to what is shown in your first post. The unit that I reported as failing had the nut which secured the valve to the diaphragm back out, as well as having the valve stem seize in the bronze valve guide. Best bet might be to contact CC about it, I'm pretty sure they'll have all your answers... but I'd still recommend just pulling the thing apart and judging the quality for yourself. As I said they may have improved the design since then, but somehow I doubt it. The diaphragm, if it is just a die cut flat piece, I would think that alone would dissuade anyone from using it.

Re: (GSRswapandslow.)
Dorman Products manufactures a bunch of stuff that can be found at such fine automotive institutions as Autozone, Pep Boys and Napa. I'm assuming the two pieces in question were found clamping the diaphragm? Kinda look like brass or copper colored steel stampings with a radiused lip? They are actually freeze plugs from a Chevy or some other domestic iron... If CC changed the diaphragm to a convoluted design when they redesigned the the cap, then hats off to them for product improvement. I still have the defunct CC unit laying around if you wanna see pics.

please post pics....
it might be the car craft.....it does hvae a similar top hat i guess...but just no markings
and Dorman seems to make things for just about everyone...i was suprised after looking at their site...they're huge
the flanges are weird though, they are much smaller than a deltagate...
but i'll try to get a pic of hte diaphragm and post it up soon
