Default My -An Lines - Sanity Check

Hey guys,

I decided to be brave and construct my own -an lines in preperation for turbo install. I think everythihg went well. I only used hand tools and dont have access to a bench vice.

Here you can see that the braided hose did back out just a little for the turbo oil drain - the space btween the nut and red tape. Is this normal? Within acceptable limits? Should I trash it?

You are likely ok there... there is still a lot of hose inside the fitting. I say run it.

Did you just push the fitting onto the hose or spun it it by hand onto the hose? Did you lube the fitting and the hose?

I twisted the nut on the hose by hand and bottomed out the hose to the nut lip. Used wd-40 on the nut threads, and the male threads from the fitting. Turned everything realively slow and stopped when end felt bottomed out. Then turned a little more just to get the flats straight.

Sounds good to go then. I always use assembly lube when assembling an lines.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the feedback.

what do you all think about pressure testing the chra with these an hoses attached? I finally got this thing together and a little paranoid about fittings and hoses leaking after I install because everything was so tight and tricky to orchestrate the assembly.

Wouldn't hurt one bit, actually a good idea. Looks like a GTX286x? What turbine housing? Any chance you could snap a pic of the nozzle (you'd have to take off the turbine housing to see it), but probably too late.

Wow good eye. Yeah Its a gtx2860r gen 2. Everything about this turbo is tight and a "tiny" bit annoying as far as workable space goes. I was originally provided a .83 or .84 housing but after some searches and results from various forums I decided to go with a .63. Anyhow, I did snap some pics of the housing before the install. I purchased it from TiAL sport website.

And if anyone is wondering, yes I did have to shave a part of the block. Not the block webbing behind the compressor housing though but the little ledge over the clutch slave cylinder. At first I just notched it but decided to go full crazy so I can fit a 3 inch silicone intake elbow.

I have since trimmed down the elbow to sit closer to turbo and its perfect clearance for CSF fan install.

Frankly, I like your style. Everything done with care. Real good choice on the turbo, should be unbelievable responsive. The 0.63 was a wise investment for street performance. And the GTX2860 Gen 2 compressor has the chops for like 40 lb/min of airflow. In the realm of 400 hp worth of air. You already knew that. Tial parts have been outstanding. You running the MVS wastegate on that flange? You're a supercore away from another 80 hp or so if you need it, in the GTX2867 Gen 2... But I think you got the best GTX28 combo ever made by Garrett.

This is the sort of quality project that comes from maturity, resources, and care...

PS

Thanks for the pics!

Hey thanks for noticing and your positive feedback. Yes, I will be using a TiAL 38mm MVS. Controlling boost will be a 4 port MAC valve. I purchased the kit from Go-Autoworks. While Greg is great and his work phenomenal, I felt there were a few corners cut to save cost it seems. The nuts and bolts were sub-par and seemed like general and generic hardware store equipment so I sourced inconel studs, washers, and nuts from Full Race. For the 5 bolt downpipe I chose to go with nuts and studs from ECS Tuning (BMW, VW, Audi, etc..) which appear to be inconel as well and were parts from a turbo configuration. I'm going to be sending my feedback and experience to Greg - maybe he can offer these as an option for those who are looking for better and much more reliable upgrade. Things like the kit coolant and drain lines seem to be a "universal" fit which didn't work for my scenario either so I went with ATP banjo fittings and such. Also, the OEM exhaust manifold studs were too short for the turbo manifold - replaced them with Titanium 55mm studs which I tried to avoid but couldn't find a source for inconel studs at this length and shank spec that is commercially available.

I think we've all been down the road of doing the same things more than once due to the more "economical" option and I'm really trying to avoid that, again lol.

I know what you mean. Credit where credit is due. ATP is an excellent supplier too, for all the odds and ends needed. I have spent a ridiculous amount of money with them over the last 14 years. Its a lot of fun doing one of these projects with money and time to do them right!

I've got a B16 on the go with the GTX2867 G2 and the Spa top mount manifold I'm trying out (Tial MVR instead of the 38mm option). I had this turbo from my Saab project, but decided to use the GTX2967 on the Saab instead (2.3L, low redline, and extremely stout. Couldn't use more than an MVS on the manifold so I tried to make up exhaust flow on the turbine side). I nearly bought the GTX2860 G2 for the B16 but figured maybe I'll just turn it up and use the airflow. Sad for the loss in transient response though. Lets say less torque will allow a gentler clutch, and easier life on the sleeves right? Gotta convince myself somehow...
