My engine is going under the wrench (long!..no 56K)
After weeks of looking for the right shop to do my engine, I finally found one just a few minutes away from my house. When went there last Monday, there was a Ferrari Testarossa parked in the grarage. The engine had been yanked and was undergoing a rebuild. Next to it was an MR2 undergoing an engine swap. I asked the chief mechanic (who seemed to be the owners son) what engine he was swapping in and he said that the owner of the car wanted to swap in an Altezza engine. "What a waste" I thought to myself, and I think the chief mechanic was thinking the samething. There was a yellow thing parked in the corner. It was just a frame that was undergoing reenforcement. I asked the chief what it was. "We're building a race car based on the BMW M3", he said.
The owner, a man who appeared to be in his late fifties, invited me in and I explained exactly what I wanted. When I said I had a turbo Type R, his eyes lit up.."wow!" he said. "So what do you want us to do you for you" I told him that I wanted him to replace the pistons that I had fried. He grinned and told be that he could do that, but that's not what what they are all about (not completely anyways)
He then proceeded to explain what kind of customers he gets. (Ferrari's, BMW's, GT-R's...you name it...its been here.) "Turbo ITR?" I asked... "you'll be the first" and he grinned again. "But there's nothing we can't do"
He proceeded to explain that most shops would simply rebuild my engine, drop in in the car, and cut it loose. But in his shop, he will make sure that engine is race worthy, even if its only for street use.
This is the device the use (it benchmarks the engine at the crank before it even sees the engine bay.):
It allows them to gauge the the ideal operating environment of that engine and tune it accordingly. So when I get my ECU tuned, I can simply dump all that data in to the ECU and be set. My engine will be tuned here and I will be there to witness it all...I will bring my digicam and documenting all of it.
This shop simply rocks the house! Here is some more pics of some of the cars they've done in the past.
Alfa-Romero
Toyota Celica GT-S
Your guess is as good as mine..looks awesome though
Porsche
Fiat
Another Alfa (I think)
More to come soon
