motor blew on the dyno today...dont know why????
first off motor was a fully build 2.0 ls/vtec
GE sleeves
eagle rods
CP pistons 84mm
compression was 9:1, .004 piston to wall, ring gap was at .019 and .017
tuning was done with aem ems by experienced tuner
we made about 7-8 runs total.
final run was made on 19psi and car was making about 390whp qand 298wtq
a/f was no higher than 11.5:1 across the board
timing was at 17 degrees
93 octane(according to chevron)
melted #3 piston BAD, and 1,2,and 4 had cracks on the intake valve reliefs. and im pretty sure the headgasket blew also because water was boiling in the overflow tank and overflowing slightly.....WTF???

Holy **** Dave. What did your tuner say? Are you going to be around tomorrow? I can come by and take pictures to post up here if you are.

no im not even gonna **** with it till monday. wasnt tuners fault at all. those were the setting i wanted for a/f and timing.

Re: (99B16Si)
I mean did he give you any input after it was said and done? Did you check everything you could before you went to the dyno? I still think I am sleeping.

No kidding!!! there so many variables don't blame pistons!

everything was PERFECT....ive seen CP's shelf pistons hold well over 600whp but i dont know what the hell happebed to mine...the tune was perfect and conservative...o well itll be fixed in a week

Re: (tony1)
You can melt ANY piston, its not the pistons.
Something went wrong, probably pushing it too far on pump gas. Detonation and/or preignition can cause the apperance of a burned/melted piston and leave alumiumn splatters on the cylinder head and spark plug. What were you doing to monitor detonation?

Re: (danl)
burnt pistons eh ? First question is what was the EGT like ? second question is are you sure the WB02 is accrurate. Answer those 2 and youll be well on your way. Other issue. somebody else mentioned it. There is some knock thats almost impossiableto hear. And typically it does the type of damage your describing.

Wow...punch yourself in the face.
The thing is...most pistons out there will take whatever you can throw at them.
I'm leaning towards the tuned fucked up and convinced you it was the parts. Or Bad Gas...orrrrrr you were an idiot and beat the **** out of the car ona basemap before tuning. Brought him a hurt motor...

Re: (Suprdave)
my $$$ is on the timing wasnt really 17 degrees
sorry to hear.
I would nicely go back and look things over w/ the tuner, because the odds are its the tuner, not the motor.

Dave this is Scooba from NC, Really sorry about your motor I was patiently waiting to see those #'s. I have heard that Eagle Rods are not good over 15 lbs but not sure. Also what plugs where in your car and at what gap? Did a clip come off the piston? Well hope you get her back soon take care see ya back down there in a couple months with my Boosted b20 vtec hatch.

I would like to see Mase's response on this as well Dave. I want to find out wtf happened to your motor.

jezzzz. timing could have been 21 btdc and if the motor was tunned right it might not have knocked at all. theres a few factors that could do this. Sharp edge on the piston where theres a valve reliefe. Thatll hot spot and burn thru quickly. Just by the descrpition of the damage it actually sounds like the motor leaned out. its possiable he could have run out of fuel pump. ive seen motors go lean like 15.8:1 and higher not knock and eat pistons.o anythig is possiable. Looking at a plug isnt gonna answer much as the engine was comming apart it sent debris everywhere. looking at the tips of the turbine wheel and the exhuast valves and ports however will tell alot more.

Re: motor blew on the dyno today...dont know why???? (99B16Si)
19 PSI made whatever power.
I assume you turned up the boost for the next run, then boom?
All I have to say is 19+ PSI on pump gas........
Yeah, it's the pistons' fault........

ovbiously somthing WASNT perfect.....dont blame the pistons...injector could have fauled causing that cylinder to take a **** , thats what im leaning twards

Re: motor blew on the dyno today...dont know why???? (Turboteggy)
390 hp on pump gas is not a problem AT ALL with that setup if it's properly tuned.
Did this happen instantly on the last run? or was the car starting to lose power on the last couple of pulls?

very good call willis....the car smoked BAD st the very end on the second to last run and i was like WTF was that??? then the next run it went bye bye.
i dont blame the pistons but all i have to say is my JE SRP's lasted longer under more abuse a while back. i didint expect the pistons to give out that quick but like i said...i guess something would have given out sooner or later, better a piston than a rod
