Because he wants to know if he's getting ripped off. Why don't you just answer his question or keep to yourself?

I called around the other day about getting a hone done... One place wanted $20 to hone all 4 cylinders, and $20 per cylinder to bore over .25. Another place wanted $150 to do all of that. I'm not sure if these prices are typical or not, but it's a start.

I just want to have an idea ..Most places wont give me prices over the phone because they have too much "work" like to waste time on the phone for a customer thats not granting he will take the parts to them...yes they are smart a$$es over here...

Well i dont live in the Continental USA so thats why i ask..to have a general idea..Usually things here will be a lil bit cheaper than USA costs(in machine shop work)..So i know it wont(or shouldn't) go over that price you guys say.

Also like u mention prices seem to vary rom MS to MS..

The machine shop thats assembling my short block quoted me around $200 for a hone, assembly, polish crank, and i believe to balance it.

There was recently a add in my paper here which made me call cause I couldn't find any shops around here and they had a pretty good advertisement
Crankshaft Polish: $40
Balancing: $150
Bore/Sleeve/Hone: $100/cylinder w/ me supplying sleeves
Block Assembly:$300
P&P: $200
3-way Valve: $150
After this I decide I'm just going to go through Earl to take care of my whole block when i'm ready assembly and sleeves and everything...
Once I compared it's easier to go through Earl with a reputation that really makes me feel safe.

Finding a machine shop is like finding a doctor to do a surgery. Would you just call up surgeon on the yellow pages and compare prices..?

My suggestion,

find it based on word of mouth, I have had a lot of cust with horror stories on machinist who uses harbor freight bore gauge and calipers and etc.
- Didn't do what the job entailed to
- install wrong crank >> crank hits the oil squirter and KAboom first start up
- Install Rod backward
- Too loose of clearance on the bearing or too tight, burns oil or seized bearings
- too loose skirt to wall clearance >> pistons knocking and slapping

So you have spent $3-4K on parts and would go half assed on some dumb *** just to save $ 200 ?

Ask the right question, go by there and see how they work and etc...

stan

I paid $80 an hour for my machine shop work. Which was plenty, but I know it was done right.
