its the head that makes the difference.

at the same psi level, you cans ee as much as 50 more hp with the vtec head.

i would do the vtec head, but i would also do after market sleeves to make a really solid engine.

You don't need sleeves for almost any power level. Look at that hatch Jeff just tuned, 550 WHP stock sleeves. Said it drove 2 hours there, 2 hours back, and was beat on for an entire season at that power level.

dont rev above the stock ls limit unless you have upgraded bolts on the rods. Sleeves come with time and you can do it without sleeves so the tune has to be on

i wouldn't give that advice to just anyone though. You have to tune something fairly conservatively when doing that and a lot of people probably couldn't tune a car for 300hp on stock sleeves.

Not in anyway saying i could, just saying that experience helps in doing things like that.

Built Ls/Vtec (9:1)...81.5mm stock sleeves, balanced crank, je pistons, eagle rods, ACL bearings, and a ported skunk2 intake manifold. dont plan on revving any highe then 8500 rpm if that.

Like I said, Jeff just tuned a stock sleeve car to 550 WHP with no blockguard, no nothing. It's never been proven to help with anything.

yeah it's no decided answer....550 is really pushin it. A lot of people do 400-450 before sleeves. Don't worry about sleevin...if you need sleeves you know what you are doing or have a lot of money to spend

people spin bearings cause they are dumb asses...they slap on a vtec head on a stock ls block and spin it to 10k and wonder why they spin bearings. If you build an ls/vtec right and dont go nuts on the rpm's you will have em last a very very long time.
