Default ls turbo tranny (cable)

I currently have a 92 ls swap in my crx. The 92-93 cable tranny came with ys1 which is quicker gearing (correct me if I am wrong). My tranny is going bad I am wondering if I got a regular s1 or y1 would it make a big difference. I go all the way through my gears qiuck as hell, last night I buried the speedo at 125 about half way through 5th and it kept pullin hard for about 5-10 secs after I had it buried then i let off. has anyone delt with both trannies and what is better for 9-10psi, thanks.

The 92 LS transmission isn't geared for quick acceleration. From what I remember it is similar to the later model LS ratios.

Does anyone know if JDM cable S1/Y1 gears will go into a 92-93 USDM LS trans? I know there is something different with the 92-93 trans' vs. 90-91....It may just be the mainshaft clutch disk diameter....I need to shorten some of my LS gears.

Ok say this next statement a few times out loud:

"I DON'T WANT A JDM S1/J1 TRANNY !!!"

Now this is coming from pesonal experience mind you. I had a JDM S1 tranny on my boosted LS for a while. I HATED it. The gears were so short I could bang all the way into 3rd before I even hit 50mph. Traction is also a problem with gearing that short, as they deliver the same amount of torque to the ground in a shorter amount of time than a longer geared tranny. If that makes sence . Granted it makes a great tranny for stop light to stop light blasts........... if you can get traction that is.

Maybe if I had a built engine that would turn higher RPM's like I do now I would have enjoyed the short gears more. On a mostly stock LS engine the gears are way to short. At 7000 RPM in 5th on a JDM S1/J1 you'll top out at about 115mph. Cruising at 70mph in 5th nets you about 4500 RPM. Thats alot of noise when you're just cruising. If you like driving around in 4th gear all the time on your current tranny, that about what it will be like on a JDM S1/J1 in 5th.

The JDM Y1 might be better if you're wanting shorter gears, it's not quite as bad as the S1, but it's still ment to be on an engine with a 8K+ redline.

Honestly though I'd drop in a 92-93 LS cable tranny, with a nice stout clutch setup and roll on that. The LS tranny is geared well to the LS engine. You're not turning 8K+ rpm's like the VTEC engines are, so I don't see shortening the gears to be that much of a performance gain. I tried to do a free way blast with my turbo Ls and JDM s1 @ 6-7psi against a few cars. Oh I was blowing the doors off everyone till I topped out around 110mph, and got passed..... Thats when I decided to stick with the LS tranny.

1st and 2nd gear are really short on the ls tranny, but 3rd gear is really long...and maybe too long unless you're motor is really built and putting atleast 350 to the wheels.

The JDM 90-91 S1,J1,Y1, and A1 are all the same style trannies. They are completely differen't than the 92-93 YS1 style trannies. The input shafts on the 90-91 trannies are a bit smaller than the input shafts of the 92-93 YS1 trannies so in order to switch you will need a different clutch disk. The internals of the 92-93 trannies are similar to the 94-up hydro trannies, and many of the internal parts are interchangable.
