ls rods + stock d16 pistons(again)
wtf i just got them in yesterday and i was looking at them closley. the hole in both pistons are diffrent sizes. is this what has to be moded to make the ls rods fit my d16 pistons. i thought the end of the rod had to be shaved to fit.
can someone please explain this to me?

Mods to rods (hey, that rhymed). Big end bore width milled to match D16 crank's rod journals. Small end bore bushed to match D16 piston's smaller pin size.
Tada.

Re: ls rods + stock d16 pistons(again) (DSF)
ok thanks
wouldn't that raise the hight of the piston with the bushing.

Re: ls rods + stock d16 pistons(again) (DSF)
if the rods are the same length from the center of each hole then the piston hight will be the same but if they are measured from end to end then the piston will be higher. it will be what ever the bushing size is.
does anyone know how rods are measured?

Let us know how it goes, and how much it costs

Okay, just got off the phone with 2 machine shops and here is what they quoted:
LS Rods:
Rebush set of 4 rods = $32, but I must supply the bushings
Mill the sides of the large end of the 4 rods to fit crank $35-40
Press in ARP rod bolts and resize/recondition rods $40
Remove LS pistons from rods, remove Y8 pistons from rods and put Y8 pistons on LS rods $40
Total: $142-147 + price of new bushings
This is getting expensive...I might still use my ZC rods...
My question is, where do I get the bushings I need for the LS rods to work with D16 pistons...both machine shops I called said that I must supply the bushings.

Re: ls rods + stock d16 pistons(again) (00civicvtec)
I'm curious. how much boost are you hoping to hold with those rods?
I've been looking into building up my D16Y8 and this seems like a good build up.
The other alternative is the Supra piston, rings matched with b-16 rods.
Anyone know the pro's & cons between these two setups?
I'd like to run 10-12 lbs at the max.
Thanx

heck i was running 12psi all the time on my stock internals (y8), so has vtc_civic and a few other people...this was just w/ vafc hack for awhile, now vtc is on hondata...i don't think 12psi on stock internals is that hard on it...they y8 engine is still pretty damn strong.

Re: ls rods + stock d16 pistons(again) (98civicEX)
I'm only going to be boosting 10psi now (w/ V-AFC hack)...stock Y8 rods would be fine, but you can never have TOO strong. The ZC rods I have are beefier than my Y8 rods, but the LS rods put all the D-series rods to shame (good for around 350hp+ @ flywheel).
With the 1G-GTE supra pistons/rings (have to import them) + B16 rods you have to notch your block to clear the larger rods + do the same machine work to the rods as you do to the LS (rebush, mill).

i plan on boost 15 psi with a 3 mill head gasket.
man that is looking expensive!! ****

Just read MatT3T4's post on effective compression.

Re: ls rods + stock d16 pistons(again) (dustin)
325 i dont have!!
i was just thinking i bet they could bore out the pins in the ls pistons. that would work as a bushing.

Eagle rods, $325

Eagle rods, $325
Yeah, if only it were that simple....you have to buy pistons too if you get eagle rods - add another $400+. Plus Eagle rods are a waste of money if you are only pushing 200-250whp...

The 86-87 D16A1 rod is the beefiest D series rod, but it's a toothpick compared to an Eagle.
I guess it depends on your budget and how much piece of mind you want.

Yes, but you still have to buy a set of pistons w/ aftermarket rods....LS rods are MUCH beefier than any D-series rod, and will give you a piece of mind when you are only pushing 200-250hp when they have been proven to 350hp+
But in the end, as we all know, it comes down to how well the motor is tuned, I have seen around 270-280hp on stock toothpick D16Y8 rods
I'm personally at LEAST going to use the beefier ZC rods, and might use the LS rods if I can find out where to get the bushings...and my ARP rod bolts will work in either rod set.
Plus D-series motors are cheap if you blow one....and i've got plenty of extra d-series parts lying around
If I was building a 400hp+ 30psi D-series beast (might be a good project with my other block) I would get a set of eagle rods and JE pistons for sure

More food for thought...
A machine shop can machine grooves into stock pistons so that can accept aftermarket clips. This will allow you to use an Eagle rod or any other aftermarket rod with a floating pin.

Re: ls rods + stock d16 pistons(again) (Sonny)
True
But if I were going to spend the money on aftermarket rods I would go ahead and get some pistons as well
Someone help me figure out how to get the LS rods to mount to the D16 piston...
Here are LS rods/pistons that are seperated:
The pin on the LS pistons is 0.826", the pin on the D16 pistons is 0.748"

Allright, I talked to Brian Crower and he can supply me the bushings needed to use the LS rods on a D16 piston for $8/ea.

Sweet. Are they steel?
How do you keep the wrist pin from pushing the bushing out when you press the pin in.

grand total $239 give or take... was planning on going this route too....now i'm just thinking about eagle rods $325 shipped what to do what to do.
