Default LINK engine management troubles.

Hello- I have a friend with a turbo subaru 2.5rs and he just bought the LINK management for his car. I am hoping one or two of you could possibly help us out. Here is the problem, quoted from a discussion with someone online.

I decided to put in the Link plus today in my turbo rs. I hooked the harness and then the serial link box and a serial cable to my laptop. I put the ignition in the ON position and tried to connect in the PC Link software. It said it cannot find a link device. I tried playing with the COM port properties as it says in the instructions but that didnt help.

I don't have the link bolted or screwed down, its just sitting in the passenger foot rest area, not sure if this is a problem.

I am going to try a friends laptop and then maybe call link on monday if i cant get it to work.

Any ideas?
We tried a new laptopm and we also tried reinstalling the software. The car will indeed run, but very poorly. This tells us that the ECU does work, but we are unable to communicate with it from our PC.

Any help?
