TurboXS offers one that uses the factory sensor, or an add-on sensor. It is quite a bit more than that eBay deal. Of course, it is probably a bit more complicated of a unit too...

Their website describes how they alter the sensitivity of the lite, based on RPM. This keeps the sensitivity adjusted, relative to the engine noise levels...

$129.00

Here is some more from their site... "The KnockLite system connects to a broadband frequency knock sensor such as a Bosch knock sensor, but it can also be connected to a suitable factory sensor. It is very important to carefully position the knock sensor on the engine as you are trying to detect the ringing of the cylinder and so this has a major effect on the performance of any knock detection system. The actual mounting of the knock sensor and the torque setting of the mounting bolt is important as well to provide the best contact for the knock sensor. Under normal operation the KnockLite measures the RPM and adjusts its sensitivity to suit. It then measures the engine noise and determines whether knock is present. If knock is detected it will determine how severe the knock is and flash either an amber or a red LED. The KnockLite initially needs to learn the characteristics of the engine and this is done by activating the KnockLite program mode. In program mode you rev the engine to three separate RPM points and capture the engine noise levels from the knock sensor using the Program pushbutton. This is done over three points in the RPM range so that the KnockLite can determine an engine noise profile. Once calibrated the KnockLite sensitivity can be increased or decreased using the Program button. The KnockLite uses a RISC processor (which is a fancy name for a small micro-controller) to process the knock signal, determine the RPM and store all the calibration information in its non-volatile memory. ^^if i disabled the knock sensor through my ecu via uberdata would this light still work?

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by coptzer &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">all a knock sensor is is a piezo electric sensor which when it detects knock it creates its own voltage, the only hard part about a knock sensor is how you read it, you would have to know at which voltage the knock sensor is creatin enough voltage to which the "knock" is actually "knock" and not engine noise</TD></TR></TABLE>

Exactly and that's why knock sensors for the most part are trash. "knock" is the most common name for a spike in cylinder pressures. This spike comes in so many shapes and ways it's formed (preignition, hot spots, detonation, etc) that it's hard to pinpoint a specific sound for "knock". The best way is to detect knock is checking the plugs IMO and then listening for it with the tape recorder method even though I have never personally tried this.

A knock sensor isn't reliable enough for anyone to tune or watch "knock". Which is why most tuners don't use it.

Not sure <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by tallyturbo &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">^^if i disabled the knock sensor through my ecu via uberdata would this light still work?</TD></TR></TABLE>

Not sure about that one. I'd give TurboXS a call.

It shock be fine, as you are cutting into the wire from the sensor - ecu. The signal will still be there just the ecu wont look at it.

why need knock for?? either use EGT or wideband or listen for pinging from your motor. knock sensors often give erroneous readings and alarms anyways especially if you're hopping alot or other traction issues

Has anybody ever heard of reading spark plugs? Its the new cool thing to do

it should swtill work, the sensor should be a piezo elec crystal that makes voltage when warped. unlike the above buick setup that uses a gm sensor that is actually a microphone that listens. (according to caspers ) even if the feature is disabled, it should still work. being disabled should mean that the ecu isnt looking for it therefore, wont pull any timing if it does start knocking.
