Just Got a weird Garrett t3; help!!...Pics inside
I picked up a Garrett t3 today from a friend. it is a .42/.48 After i got home and was able to check it out a bit, i noticed it was not your typical t3. After doing some research, im thinking this is off of a mercedes.
first off...what the hell? what kind of flange is this on the compressor side and where can i find one?
Next....how about this flange...isnt the lower right bolt a bit out of place to be a standard t3?
Next....yet another strange flange...where can i find it?
Shouldn't this be connected to something? i cant imagine the wastegate rod not being connected to anything.
If anyone can offer any insight that would be fanatastic. TIA
Alex

Yes, You've got an oddball turbo. Is there any name tag or part number on the turbo? If so, you have a chance to identify it. Call one of Garrett's distributors with the part number and see if they can come up with something. See http://www.turbobygarrett.com for a list of distributors. However, it is likely that if you want to use that turbo, you will be making custom flanges...

That is teh wastegate actuator arm ,it conects to the actual wastegate which it is missing. Also that is a standard 5 bolt T3 exhaust flange, now the inlet flange, that i couldnt tell you.

that looks like a turbo i started to pull off a dodge charger one time at a junkyard.. had that same flange on the compressor, and the exhaust housing, doesn't have a "built in" internal flapper (internal wastegate)its actually on the exhaust housing on the car..
so check that out, dodge charger.. forgot what year tho, it was pretty old

That's the Dodge 2.2/2.5 turbine housing, but the compressor doesn't look like the ones I am familiar with. The actuator looks like the Dodge unit, too.
Got any numbers off the CHRA?

thats off a Dodge 2.2L non-crossflow turbo. From an 89+, the earlier models were mitsu units, and some VNT ones.
You're missing the downpipe/02/wastgate housing

Wrong, the Mitsus came on automatic transmissioned cars. You got plenty of Dodge 2.2/2.5 w/ T3 before '89.

Thannk you all so much for all of the replys. Alright, i think i am going to try and work with it,just being that it is a 42/48 and there is NO shaft play whatsoever. The flanges im not too worried about, i guess those can always be custom made. About the wastegate, what can i do about that? unless i just remove that whole section that is still left on the turbo, and run an external wasetgate?

I have done some more investigation, and im thinking that the turbo is not a mercedes. There is no internal bov. However, im thinking that im going to use it for the project. If i just unbolt that wastegate actuator, and but a dp flange that covers the wastegate hole, can i run an external wastegate being that im missing the actual wastegate?

Take a look at an early 80's SAAB 900. like ~'80-'85
The housing a/r's match this car.... possibly.
If this where the turbo came from you should look for something larger.
The early '80's SAAB 900 turbo was/is rated to ~160whp...
