Default Junkyard turbo mania...Garrett T3 pics inside

Hi All:

I've been scouring the junkyards for parts for my CRX project car. I've also been keeping my eye out for turbos, so today, my brother in law and I went down to the yard and spent the day pulling turbos. I had one already (top left), but we managed to yank 3 more turbos and I now have a grand total of 4. They are all Garrett T3 turbos.

View from compressor side:

View from turbine side:

They are all in pretty good shape, but overall, the Saab turbo is in the best shape. Volvo turbo #3 does have a water cooled center section which is looking very attractive. It also has a larger .63 a/r turbine housing.

What do you guys think? Should I piece together something out of these 4 or just sell them all and get a new T28 or T3/T4B or something for my turbo ZC project?

Each turbo cost me $50 and a lot of sweat, cussing, and bloody knuckles. This sized T3 is a very popular turbo among the DIY/Junkyard turbo crowd and they usually sell for pretty good money on eBay.

I paid $160 for my 2.5 dayton turbo ( t-25 )... So those turbos could bring you a few bucks on ebay... Good luck...

Stop playing in other peoples yards !! You got a Chart to finish !!! J/K !

hunchback: Don't worry...I'm still working on that chart! I am waiting for my buddy to come back into town so that I can press the pins out of the last 2 pistons that I got (they had rods attached).

Dustin: I like that one, too, but the difference between the 45 trim and 50 trim wheel is quite large (based on a comparison of the compressor maps). That's why I was thinking of using the bottom left's center section with the bottom right's wheels/shaft and housings.

I'd like to make about 225-250whp with my setup. I've already got Eagle rods and Endyn Rollerwaves waiting to go.

nice turbos. keep in mind you can always up grade your compressor wheels compressor housings and turbine wheels. no need to spend out the *** for a new one. i would try to use the one with the oil and water housing. they run so hot in the summer. good luck man

great find

Ahh, if you want to risk taking the shaft apart then go for it Personally, I'd want the turbo balanced again if I took the shaft apart...

If you want that much whp, I'd personally go with a t3/t04b S-3 trim, .63 stage 3 turbine housing. But you won't find one of these at the junkyard hehe.

The Saab turbo was ok. One bolt was pretty tough to get to and I'm not sure that I would have been able to get it out without some help. Basically, I needed someone to hold the wrench against the bolt while I pulled on the wrench.

The Volvo turbos were not bad, but they were very time consuming. The Saab turbo can be removed from the exhaust manifold. With the Volvo stuff, you have to remove the entire exhaust manifold and then remove the turbo from the manifold.

Go to your local yard and keep an eye out for the Saab 900/900S. Of the 4 turbos above, it's the one that I will most likely keep. I like the water cooled Volvo turbo, but it will probably sell for a good price and I need more money to move forward with this project.

Are you willing to trade a .48 turbine housing for a .63?

I have a t-3 out of a Volvo with a .63 turbine housing. I'd like to have a .48.

Let me know. I'll pay for shipping.

The Saab 9000's are water and oil cooled too. Those are the bigger bodied saabs but they're not as common, in the yards, as the 900s are.
