Default JE Pistons...

Hey guys, I was searching the internet and I came across a site that seems to have pretty good prices on JE pistons. Here's the link: http://www.flatlanderracing.com/jepistoncompacts.html
They're selling them for $379/set, is this a pretty good price?

I see...does Race Engineering include the pins with the JE Pistons? Do I need to use JE pins or could I use Honda pins? Thanks.

I think you need to use JE pins and keepers as well. stock pistons are pressed onto the pins, JE's are free-floating.

I do stand corrected! I was thinking SRP's! JE's are ~$400.00.

All pistons are full floating. The pins are pressed onto the RODS.
Most aftermarket rods are full floating. stock rods are not.

That depends on what model/year engine you have.

They are much weaker, high silicon content pistons.

Much weaker to what extent? Does anyone have composition break down and tolerence figures for both? I'm curious to know how different or similar they really are.

They are much weaker, high silicon content pistons.

I was under the impression that:

Low Silicon Pistons
JE
SRP
Ross

NON Silicon Pistons
Wiseco

High Silicon Pistons
Arias

What does this mean?

High Silicon Content - Very Little Expansion
Low Silicon Content - Expansion with heat
NON Silicon Content - A lot of Expansion

The Arias pistons run very tight piston-wall clearances (ie: .001"-.003")
The JE/SRP & Ross Pistons run tight clearances (ie: .003"-.0035")
The Wiseco Pistons run loose tolerances, but still well within factory specs (ie: .004"-.005")

Most forced induction cars should run .003"-.0035" piston-wall clearances!

Yeah that's strange.. my friend was running crower rods and JE pistons originally in his 1.8bar D16Y8 turbo setup, and that lasted him about 2 weeks. After that, he changed over to arias pistons, and he's was running fine.. he told me to stick with arias.. more reliable, stronger, and cheaper.. whether its true or not I dont know..

Nathan, It could be that he didn't let the car warm up to run.. Those low silicon content pistsons (JE's) need to be warmed up before abusing them. I know tons of cases where JE pistons hold more than 20 psi.

I think you have some of it backwards.

From an SRP advertisement "SRP: High silicon alloy for tighter piston to wall clearance"

Arias pistons have very low silicon content. JEs are low silicon content. Both should be FULLY warmed up before driving on them. Arias pistons slap pretty bad until they are warmed up.

The SRP pistons are high silicon content and do not require as much attention to warming up as the others. They are also much weaker, and melt at lower temperatures.

Like Dustin said.

In the catalog they advertise the pistons for mild turbo and nitrous use. They shouldn't be used for anything more.
