I know the fuel pump hums, but the other day I started the car up and i could hear a loud metallic whiney noise, which quieted down after a while.

I got out of the car and looked initially for the sound and it was coming from the back of the car, narrowed down to only thing in the back.. the fuel pump.

Is this an indication that the pump is going bad?

It's a holly intank 255lph pump (~100$)...

<--- thinks it's time to research a new intank pump..

 

Are you absolutely sure it is the pump? If so, then maybe try taking it out and re-installing it.

 

pump has been in there since march of last year when i got the car back from the rebuild....

i would think for 100 dollars it's not some crazy high flow high pressure model...

could be wrong..

 

My Walbro makes noises like that, especially when the tank gets closer to empty. It seems normal. BTW - I'm using the hi pressure version.

 

Mine doesn't make a sound

My freind has a a JRSC GSR, and the intank fuel pump makes the same noise when he startes his car in the morning or when the car is really low on gas! It seems normal! Does it do it all the time?
