Default im confused

So I have been reading up on forced induction. All the posts say that a smaller turbo will be better in the lower rpm's than a larger, but a larger will hold well in the high revs.

When it is said that a small turbo will run out of steam at high rpm, what is exactly meant by that? Like alot of drop of hp or just not the feeling of as much torque anymore?

My main idea is to get my car running 200hp. I would like to get a somewhat flat torque and hp curve-- IE be making decent power in the low, midrange, and high rpms. It doesnt have to make 200 right off the line, but I need some power. A b7 doesn't have hardly anything until 5000, and even there it is still scrawny.

I am really not into doing an engine swap. I suppose I could go for a z6 for some more support from the aftermarket. I understand that either way it would be a really good idea to build the engine so I don't throw rods etc. My main goal is to try to get around 200hp and around that in torque to have a halfway powerful car. And, like I said, have power throughout the rpms. Could someone help clarify how it would be done?

you will be bored with 200hp very quickly. But in keeping with that goal a smaller turbo will be more linear power curve and have alot more low end. By small i dont mean a saab turbo or antying that small but like a 14g or a 50 trim with a .48 housing or many others

Im not looking for a street racer, just something with a little power to get me going. I need some merging/passing power too.
Would one of those older model eclipse turbos work? I could probably make a run up to Chicago and find a bunch there.

A TD05 I believe it is from a 2nd generation dsm should work for what you're looking for. Don't expect it to boost through 7k rpm though

that's still a T25 size, and the TD04s and upgraded TD05s are from the 1st gen DSMs. Finding one of those is a waste of time, whether the engine be D,B,H, or any other make. They didn't make 200hp themselves on the car which is why you can find so many of them out there available. They are usually extreme high mileage or blown, and are not worth the cost of rebuilding.

Get real equipment and real parts for this engine. (which you never did describe, so that helps you even less). Don't play the "where's waldo in the junkyard game"

For what you would spend boosting that motor, why not do a motor swap? You would have more reliability!! Boosting would be just as much if not more than a swap especially when your only looking for 200ish. I found a complete 1998 GSR swap with 80k miles and new timing belt and water pump for 1500. The turbo kit I am buying is over 2 grand not including tuning or installation if I was to have some one else install.

Oh I know, it is the same up in the panhandle. The guy was originally asking for 2k but needed money for to build a computer for school and I had crisp hundred dollar bills!!! I prob could of got it for 1200 if I would of haggled more.

I did find a older swap for 1200 in Orlando but I didn't have the cash at the time.

The reason I don't like swaps is because they are full of problems. It seems like a pain to work with. I already have a running engine, why not boost it?
I'm also not much for swaps because they just have too much of a ricey feeling to them. When I think of swaps I think of a pos on craigslist way overpriced and full of problems.

thats a silly way to think of a swap, a gsr swap with some bolt ons would get u your 200hp n/a. swaps are easy and can be done in a day. and if u think swapping an engine in a honda is a pain then i dont think u should attempt this on your own. that being said the smaller turbos that turbo ls said to use will get u where u wanna be and more. look into a go autoworks kit and think long and hard about your budget because to me the money your gonna spend to have 200hp is not worth it.

If you don't know what your doing your going to run into problems. I don't understand your thinking. You think it would be harder to work on say a stock GSR rather than a turbo kit? With a stock GSR all you have to do is install and drive with normal maintenance. A turbo you have to install, find a reputible tuner and hope nothing breaks or goes wrong. You have a running engine that was never made for forced induction, that's why I advise not going boost especially if you think a simple swap would be harder. First time I have heard a swap to be considered ricer.
Yeah craigslist is a hit or miss place. I got lucky getting mine off there but I had been watching and waiting for almost a year before I found the one for me. Now hmotorsonline is a great place to get a motor swap. They even gaurantee that all sensor will work. Most of them are very low mileage motors as well.

I really think you should look at swaps vs turbo if you think a swap is harder.

You should definatly be able to find a swap for what your going to pAy to boost the lil D. And as said before if a swap seems like to much trouble then putting together a turbo kit is gonna be a real kicck in the nuts. Th go autowork kits are pretty reasonable but keep in mind they still don't include everything you need.
