Default Ignition Timing Check? How to?

Long story short, I accidentally put the trans into second gear while doing around 90, going for fourth. I look at the tach, and it's absolutely floored, well past 8500rpm. I hear kaboom.

Pull off on the shoulder, and the car seems to be running ok, nothing abnormal, so I drive it home.

Next day, I head out to do a few errands, and the car is running like absolute ****, backfiring everytime I let of the gas, stuttering while under even light loads randomly.

And to top it off, I checked the oil and it had burned about 2.5 to 3 quarts from teh time on teh highway and the next day.

Now my question. How do I check my ignition timing? Any writeups, or howtos. I used the search on here, and didn't get what I was looking for. Used google, didn't find anything very useful.

It's got no timing belt cover, but it's got the honda cover over the cam sprockets. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Just wanting to make sure it's the head that's effed, before I tear the engine apart.

I would be looking at bent valves, cracked pistons etc not ignition timing. Get the head off and take a look.

Forget the timing, check for bent valves, do a compression check. Time for a new head.
