Default IAT sensor relocation

My friend has a turbocharged 98 Ls engine and the intake manifold doesn't have a spot for the IAT sensor like the 94-95 engines do. Right now he just has it hanging in the engine bay which is causing a code 10. My question is does he need a obd1 IAT sensor or can he use the obd2 sensor and put it in the charge pipe? He's running a po6 ecu and obd1 wiring harness.

Drill a hole, use a rubber grommet, and stick the thing in the charge pipe.
