Default I (think) I have problems....

I will try to give the best exlination I can of whats going on....

89 ZC motor with ZC tranny.
Stock internalls. 10psi Tuned with Zdyne.
Exedy pressure plate with Action 6 puck disc

At idle the motor puts out a kind of weird resonance....kinda like a "putt...putt...putt". Not really like the motors ring lands are blown however. I have heard a blown motor before, and it does not sound like that. It may just be I need to replace the plugs (old). I did change the oil at first just to see if I got any metal flakes and I didn't find any. also, I am getting no smoke out the breather.

From 1K to 2K RPMS the motor sounds perfectly fine, but for some reason it suddenly gives a loud metallic resonance at around 2K Rpm's. Now this sound ONLY happens when I'm driving IN GEAR. When I just Rev the motor it sounds fine at all RPMS.

When I slow down from 2nd or 1st, the motor (or tranny) gives off a different pitched metallic sound, that is proportional to that of the engines RPM's. (IE, motor slows from 3000 to 1000....metallic sound gets quieter). This sound also changes pitch every time I down shift while slowing down....IE from 2nd to 1st, even if the clutch is dis-engaged.

SO WTF IS GOING ON!!!!!!!

I havn't had very much time at all to start investigating, but thought I would share with all of you first.

any ideas?

I hope to get a compression/leak down test within the week, and change the plugs.

Could be a couple of things actually. Your plugs might start to be going bad...Maybe it could be your wires? But who knows? A bad o2 can give you those symtoms as well. You should be getting enough fuel...considering you have a Zyne (sp?)....

Buy anyway, check your injectors as well...

GOod luck...

It ran PERFECT for 3 months after the clutch install.....and is just now starting to do this.

The clutch/shifting is still smooth as silk....???

Its just making the weird sounds.

and also BTW, the motor doesn't seem to have lost power. It drives just the same...

is the sound comming from the exhaust? if is you probably have a shot cat converter. check to see if the catalyst is fine.

Usually the putt putt noise is something bad in the ignition. Change your plugs, cap, and rotor to get rid of that.

For the other stuff, it sounds to me like something bad in the tranny. Most likely a bent or worn shift fork ont he 1-2 gear set. Probably rubbing the shafts or hardned guides. Also possible the diff has worn the spider gears down. Pull and axle and look inside. Also, drain the tranny fluid and look for debris. Aluminum from the shift forks will come out since they are non-ferrous.

Pull the tranny and inspect. My money is on something gone in there.

I changed the tranny fluid as well and didn't find any metal shavings.

From what I can tell, It does sound like its a tranny problem.

This means that all the D series trannies that I have used have been bad, or gone bad....

The stock DX tranny I got with the car was totaly crapped out, and now this.....

Its not the problem.

I have a 2.5" catco. It has welded heat sheilds.

Possible a bent valve, but not bent badley enough to unseat. Just a thought.

!!!!!!!!UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!

I just now noticed (havn't had time to investigate) that the noise at idle goes away when the clutch is pressed.

The noise sounds more like a "wobble" then a metallic "putt putt".

any ideas?

It could possible be the main bearing or a rod bearing.

well if it goes away with the clutch pressed then I would say throw out bearing not too bad. This happened to me but it made the sound ""ONLY" at idle not under power.
However, what your describing is another sound i'm a lil' familiar with.
A spun bearing. This same sound (and scenario) was happening to a friends b16.
At different RPMs it sounded like it was the half shaft or something "metallic" clicking or banging around. When he would give it power it would go away or if he was off the throttle you wouldn't hear it. we didn't think too much of it until we put the motor under boost. The sound just got louder & louder until the motor kinda died.

I hope you have a much simpler problem in your situation but this does sound very familiar to me.
good luck

Did you replace the throwout bearing??? My CX makes a terrible noise at idle and then when I press the clutch in it goes away. My old skool hot rodder dad tells me its the throwout bearing....

The throw out bearing has less then 3000 miles on it. It is the Daiken type that is included with Exedy clutch kits.

It does kinda seem like it would be a spun bearing.

But wouldn't you have to have a loss in oil pressure to spin a bearing?

I have an oil pressure gauge, and keep CONSTANT checks on the pressure. It has never droped below 50psi HOT during normal 3000-4000 cruising. The pressure guage is mounted in the turbo line, so it maybe different from the pressure the engine is seeing.

I need more information on bearing "spinning"

Thanks everyone

Sounds like the same problem I seem to have with every damn used tranny I get. I've only owned one that didn't make that same noise you are referring to, and ironicly that one had bad syncros. Input shaft bearing took a ****. Kind of a whirly noise? More noticable when downshifting too. Seems to be a common problem with the d-series transmissions mainly.

Does the sound your refering to, kinda "buzz" when accelerating? For me it does but only at a certain RPM.

IT WOULD KICK *** if its not the engine....

But your right on, with it kinda whirly when down shifting

The ls tranny in my car now does it, but in 1st and 2nd it takes till about 2 or 3 grand before it starts. But yeah, its a buzzy noise... It was worse, but I added some Lucas tranny fix and it made it a little quieter. There isn't much you can do besides pulling the tranny and rebuilding it....or for the price of a d-series, you could just buy another one.
