I have a choice.... LS or B16 transmission???
Well i have a brand new Quaife for Ls/B16 and im about to buy a transmission. I have a choice between an Ls or B16, what would be the best one for my application? I should have around 400 whp and i will be using 15in. wheels and around 24in. tall slicks. My car would mostly be used for street racing and a little bit of track use. If anyone has experienced both, please give me an insight on this. I did a search and nothing really helped, so if anyone had personally experienced this, let me know. thanx.

for mostly street use, the b16 will be quicker. as for the track, you'll have to have a decent red line to make it through the traps still in 4th gear. around 9000 should do it. maybe 8700-8800. maybe.

Wow, thats very surprising. I thought most people would choose the LS because of its long gears. well i have a built head so i could redline all the way to 10 grand, but i rather stop at around 9k. thanks for the info guys, keep them coming.

I have one more question... How does those Pro guys hit 160+ mph with honda tranny's? i know they're not using stock gearings, does anyone know what they use? I read somewhere that Jotech uses ITR tranny's with Quaife, I wonder what they modify to reach 170+ mph.

ls...ick!
b16 all the way...
your slicks can also change on where you finish (what gear).
but yeah b16..
do you need to go 180 mph??(but get to 145 mph slower than the b16...)

Nah, im not trying to go freaking 180 mph, but it would be nice to play around with the Supra's and RX-7's on the freeway and not have to worry about running out of gears. So you're saying that by using 28 tall slicks, those tranny's can go all the way up to 170 mph? that's pretty amazing.

there is ONLY 3 things I can see an LS tranny being good for.
1)traction in 1st gear on street tires. the 4.26 FD should aid in putting less torque to the wheels and making traction easier to achieve.
2)top speed highway racing.
3)highway cruising at lower rpm's
in all other respects the shorter geared transmissions will make ur car accelerate faster as long and u have traction. can u use a b16a final drive in a GSR tranny? might want to look into that too.

this subject's been beaten to death. Think about it
A shorter geared tranny will out accelerate a longer geared tranny - assuming you have traction, all else being equal. The shorter the gear, the higher numberical torque multiplier, which means more power to the ground.

What motor is this going to be done with?
In my case I looking to a ls/turbo setup.
For reading in the archives most people with ls's tend to go with a gsr tranny, correct?

Go with a gsr tranny, its not too tall and not too short...its somewhere in between.... With a gsr tranny, you have a happy medium in between...it aids in traction and the acceleration is pretty decent... If you are into hybrid trannies, go with a b16 and an ls fifth gear...

shorter gearing=u go faster... its that simple... look at how short all motor guys make there gears... turbo is differant in the sence that u need more top end out of the gears so the gears have to be slightly longer... but to "ls" long
the si tranny has a 4.4 fd... iv personally taken a couple apart
