Default How loud is Your BOV??

I was just wondering what kind of BOV's you guys have and how loud it was. i have a hks SS but still puttin together my custom turbo kit and want to know how loud mine would be. Im gonna be boosting about 8 psi. i hear that the stock DSM bov is pretty loud and i'm like damn i should of went with that but all well would of saved me a lot of $$ too!!

My old school HKS ssq isn't as loud or high-pitched as some BOV's, but I like it.

the louder your blow off valve is, the less efficient it is, generally. (you know, unless you have one of those neato electronic rice off valves)

the air is "supposed" to leave the blow off valve with as little obstruction as possible, which means that if it is REALLY loud, the air is having a harder time exiting...and you should probably adjust it

I've NEVER heard this before! Do you have any information to back up this claim?

So does that mean that the Turbo xs RFL isn't an efficient BOV? I'm not trying to be a smart ***. I'm truly asking this question cause I have never heard that before

It makes sense.

The purpose of a BOV is to release air pressure so the turbine doesn't slow-down or get smacked with a pressure wave. If the BOV is squeeling or whistling, the air is rushing though a small hole or over a hollow of some kind. That may cause there to be a little backpressure across the BOV that a wide open one wouldn't have.

IS this actually measurable? No way.

Does it make any hell of a difference in car power? No way.

It may take a tiny little bit of wear and tear off your turbo. Almost unmeasurable.

I have a GReddy Type-S....I like it...It's loud, and it works.

It's not that the blow off valve itself isn't efficient...I don't really know of any that aren't, personally. It is just that the user (you), make it inefficient by the way you tune it. I know the GReddy Type-S, but I assume most, if not all blow off valves, are adjustable...? Most people on the streets have them adjusted so that when they engage...they scream/squeek/squeal...however you want to describe it. Well, in order for it to make that noise, you have to have less surface area available for the air to flow past...thereby making it make the sound it does. The less surface area available (the smaller the escape path), the less air will escape. By turning the **** whatever way you have to turn it on your individual blow off valve, in order to widen the path in which the air takes, out of the charge pipe...the better off you are, to a degree.

Ideally, you should be able to hear the air...but it should sound like a huge rush of air...unobstructed. It shouldn't sound like a tiny 95lb Chinese woman sneezing. If you ever take notice, you'll find that most racecars don't have a squealy blow off valve...if you can even hear it over the open downpipes...lol

Werd. It's not like it's going to make you fast and furious...but it is a good idea to have it set correctly.

I believe the way the different blow off valves are constructed effects the way they sound..... At higher boost applications the blow off valve will sound louder because it's venting more protecting your turbo from compressor surge..... I noticed a big difference from 5psi to 8psi on a Greddy Type S, the pitch was a lot louder.... As mentioned there are some blow off valves that are not as loud as others.... I would rather have one that is loud and has a distinctive pitch and know it's working properly.... To each his/her own....

1G DSM

$55 for the BOV w/ flange, anodhter $16 to get it welded on. Sounds like the HKS SSQ, but not as high pitched and loud. AWESOME sounding, especially @9psi daily.

55? you got ripped off! lol just kidding.

i'll be installing one here shortly. its ugly. but it works! i dont want noise, just functionality. going to do a test fitting with RTV sealant. messy, but should hold modest boost once its dry. if its what i want then i'll jB weld or have a shop weld it.
